WVB: 6th ranked Dinos drop Wesmen

WINNIPEG - Third year Middle Beth Vinnell led the No. 2 ranked Calgary Dinos to a 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-18, 15-6) victory over the Wesmen Women's Volleyball team Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The 6'2" Vinnell had 19 kills with a hitting percentage of .654. Fifth-year outside hitter Laura McManes added 13 kills with 13 digs. Setter Leah Shevkenek had 48 assists and nine digs in the match.

Leading the Wesmen attack was Kalena Schultz with 12 kills and 10 digs. Close behind her was Taylor Boughton with 11 kills and Ashleigh Laube with 10 kills. Laube lead all Wesmen with 12 digs. Coming off the bench rookie Taylor Kleysen had a strong match with 6 kills and 9 digs.

The win improves Calgary's record to 5 - 2. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 1-6 on the season.

In the first set, the Wesmen came out strong and building on the early momentum which allowed them to take the first set 25-23. The second set also showed that when the Wesmen are firing on all cylinders they can compete with any team in U Sports. The Wesmen took the second set 25-16

In third set, Calgary coming out of the break, made a few modifications to their lineup by switching their middles. As a result of the new matchups, the Dinos took advantage of some key injuries to the Wesmen and won the set 25-12.

With a depleted roster, the Wesmen battle hard in the fourth set, but with Calgary's Beth Vinneel in the middle making timely kills, the Wesmen lost 25-17.

Going to the fifth set, Calgary with the momentum, finished the match with a 15 – 6 victory.

The two team return to action tomorrow at 6:00 pm
