SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies earned their second win of the season with a  3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-13, 25-19) victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night at the PAC.

The balanced Huskie offence featured double-digit kills from third-year Taylor Annala at 13, fifth-year Marguerite Ferguson with 12 and fourth-year Ruby Stefan with 10. Fifth-year Mackenzie Pek provided 36 assists for the Huskies in the victory.

For the Wesmen, third-year Kalena Schulz lead their offence with 14 kills and 12 digs.

With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 2-3 on the season. Winnipeg drops to 1-4.

In the first set, the Huskies grabbed a quick 5-0 lead that would carry them the rest of the way. Annala grabbed four quick kills before Winnipeg's first timeout with the score at 10-5. After the timeout, the Wesmen would chip away at the Huskie lead and narrow it down to 18-17. Saskatchewan would protect their lead as Winnipeg failed to gain an advantage in the set. Two kills from fifth-year Jenelle Sokoloski would seal the deal for the Huskies, winning 25-21.

With the score at 10-10 halfway through the second set, the Wesmen pulled away with their biggest run of the match, scoring five straight. Despite back-to-back kills from Sokoloski to try and spark a comeback, the 5-0 Wesmen run proved to be the difference in the second winning 25-18.

Saskatchewan ran away with the third game, winning 25-13.

In the fourth, the back-and-forth battle continued until the Wesmen earned themselves a 14-13 lead. But a 12-5 Huskie run down the stretch would be capped off by a Ferguson kill earned Saskatchewan 25-19 win in the deciding set.

The two teams will battle again Saturday night on Ron & Jane Graham Court at the PAC.  First serve at 6 p.m.
