WSOC: Wild winds push Pandas past Dinos

CALGARY – Gusty winds made conditions a challenge for the University of Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch as the University of Alberta Pandas secured a 1-0 win.

With the victory, the Pandas claimed the top spot in the Prairie Division in Canada West.

The windy setting accounted for the players being off on their shooting trajectory on Sunday. Both teams had problems adjusting and could not get offences in sync.

In the 17th minute, Calgary's Monika Christian launched a header from a corner kick, but it unfortunately flew over the net.

A short time later, Sydney Daines of the Pandas had a chance to increase her goal count to six. However, her shot from the left wing flew directly to Dinos goalkeeper Lauren Houghton as the first half remained scoreless.

The second half began with even stronger winds and even more miscues made by both teams. However, in the 50th minute, Kayla Kreutzer had an amazing spiraling kick, set up by Sienna Prince-Mcpherson's corner kick. The shot was handled perfectly though by Pandas goalkeeper Rebecca Reif as she denied the Dinos on one of the best scoring chances of the day.

A couple minutes later, Alberta's Georgia Tansley came down the right wing where her shot hit the left post and swirled past Houghton and into the net.

"Conditions were tough for both sides," stated Dinos head coach Troye Flannery. "Alberta exemplified what they are about, which is focusing on small things and finding ways to win.

"Our young Dinos need to take lessons from them. The Pandas did not make excuses about the wind, they just went about regular business."

The Dinos will look to reset as they will now head to Victoria and face the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday, Oct. 27. The winner of that game will advance to play the Vikes on Sunday, Oct. 29.

Alberta will host MacEwan University Griffins and the Mount Royals University Cougars in the playoffs and will play the winner of those two teams on Sunday, Oct. 29.
