Lethbridge – With a goal in each half, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's soccer team earned a weekend split with the Calgary Dinos with a 2-1 win.
Yesterday in Calgary, the Dinos clipped the Pronghorns 1-0.
With the win today, the Pronghorns improve to 4-5-1 and move past the Manitoba Bisons for fifth place for the time being. The Bisons play the Winnipeg Wesmen later this afternoon. The Pronghorns also move within a point of the Mount Royal Cougars for fourth. The Dinos record drops to 4-3-3 and only two points ahead of the Pronghorns.
During the opening 45 minutes, the Dinos had the advantage in volume of shot attempts but struggled to find their mark and the hosts would take advantage of their chance, scoring the only goal of the first half.
Leading scorer Lindsay Amatto opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Emina Arima found Amatto just inside the penalty area and after her first shot was blocked by a defender, Amatto picked the top right corner for her fifth goal of the season.
The Dinos had eight shot attempts but Pronghorn keeper Micaela Stone was only forced to make two saves, both routine. The Pronghorns attempted three shots in the half.
Only four minutes into the second half, the Pronghorns doubled their lead. Nikki Furukawa chested down a cross from Kayla Blacquiere and with a step on a Dino defender, she slid the ball past a charging Lauren Houghton.
Dinos responded right back to cut the lead to one. From a set piece, Kayla Kreuter's strike dipped at the last second finding top right corner, but that would be as close as the Dinos would get as the Pronghorns defence was able to limit the Dinos opportunities for the remainder of the game.
Statistically, there wasn't much separating the teams at the whistle. Calgary had 11 shot attempts to the Pronghorns nine and Stone finished with three saves for the Pronghorns, while Houghton made two saves in the loss. However, the Dinos did have 10 corner kicks to the Pronghorns three.
Both the Pronghorns and Dinos will head out on the road next week, traveling west with each team facing a game against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and the UBCO Heat.
