WINNIPEG – The University of Manitoba Bisons soundly beat the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 4-0 in women's soccer at the U of M West Turf Fields on Saturday, Oct. 7.

It was a record setting afternoon for Bison midfielder Hailey Lavarias, as she became the first Bison to score four goals in a game.

"It feels great obviously," Lavarias said after the game. "I just felt really good coming into the game. I set the tempo with all the goals."

It took a while for Lavarias to strike first, with both the Wesmen and Bisons trading chances early in the first half. Off a corner in the 37th minute, Lavarias fired a rebound high over Wesmen goalkeeper Madison Fordyce, for her first goal of the match.

Lavarias found the back of the net again just before the end of the first half. Bison midfielder Amanda Wong whipped in a cross, finding Lavarias to double the Bisons lead at half.

"The pass from Mandy was really perfect," she said. "It was right to the head and then top right corner and I was feeling nice after that."

The Bisons had a couple chances to start the second half, defender Hayley Ward had a shot go over the bar from in close after a corner kick in the 50th minute. Two minutes later, midfielder Celeste Gallego slid to keep the ball in Winnipeg's box and dribbled her way in tight for a shot. Lavarias netted her hat- trick in the 65th minute, scoring off another rebound to make the score 3-0 for Manitoba. In the 85th minute Lavarias continued her torrid pace by adding a fourth goal. Lavarias dashed into the Wesmen 18-yard box, and slotted home in the bottom left corner.

"She was completely on fire today," Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas said of Lavarias' performance. "We're really, really proud of her, she implemented very well some of the things we talk about, take players on, be aggressive and she did it all today."

Despite Lavarias dominating the score sheet, overall it was a team win for Manitoba, according to Martinez Lagunas.

"We did really well on defence and we got another clean sheet so that's fantastic," she said. "After the first half we said we're back to 0-0, we wanted to play a good second half and the girls did it. Two more goals in the second half, so you could see that we didn't drop the intensity.

Winnipeg and Manitoba will meet again on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. CT at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex for the first game of the 27th annual Duckworth Challenge.
