CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team was able to bounce back from Saturday's draw and snatched a 2-0 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon.

The victory was the Dinos' third of the season and improves them to 3-2-3 on the year. Winnipeg falls to 1-6-1 with the loss

The Dinos and Wesmen started off with high intensity, and both teams had solid defense set up to prevent any goals from being scored. In the 17th minute, Nicole Seavers from the Winnipeg Wesmen found a moment to break past the Dinos defense and shot from just outside the 10-yard box. Unfortunately, the ball flew straight into the hands of Dinos keeper, Lauren Houghton.

In the 19th minute, Maddison Fritze had an incredible breakaway that led her straight to her fifth goal of the season, beating the Wesmen 'keeper to the bottom left. In the 44th minute, Fritze had an another chance for a goal, but her shot curved right and ended up on the outside of the right post.

The Dinos tallied again in the second half, when Monika Christian's free kick found its way to Montana Leonard, who made no mistake for her second goal of the season on the 50th minute.

Dinos forward Amy Mikuska had a wonderful breakaway from the center of the pitch, and all the way down the left wing in the 73rd minute. Her shot was headed toward the middle of the net before Wesmen 'keeper Dutiaume got in front of it.

Calgary Coach Troye Flannery was happy with Sunday's win. "We have played some exceptional football, especially in these last four games," he said.

"So far in our half way point of the season, our defensive record has been impeccable. We had great attack in the front of our play and it showed today with two great goals. As a team, we are maturing game in and game out."

Calgary put 12 shots toward the Wesmen goal, while Winnipeg responded with seven of their own. Houghton and her Wesmen counterpart Emma Dutiaume each recorded four saves, with Houghton picking up her fifth shutout of the season. As a team, the Dinos have allowed just three goals through the 2017 campaign.

Next weekend, the Dinos will be playing back to back matches against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, with Saturday's match in Calgary and Sunday in Lethbridge. The Wesmen stay in their home city of Winnipeg to play against the University of Manitoba Bisons on Saturday and Sunday.
