VICTORIA – For the fifth game in a row the UVic Vikes women's soccer team emerged from a 90 minute battle victorious, this time picking up a 3-0 win at the expense of the UNBC Timberwolves inside Centennial Stadium on Sept. 29.
 

Kiara Kilbey scored twice to make it five goals in the past two games for the third-year forward from Victoria, while Puck Louwes backstopped the Vikes to their third straight shutout as the team proved too much for a young Timberwolves squad to handle.
 
"We got another shutout so that's very positive I would say, we were able to rest a few bodies for tomorrow which will be important," said Vikes head coach Tracy David. "I thought we did well, we defended well as a unit and also attacked when the opportunities were there."
 
The win pushes the Vikes record to 6-1-1 on the season as the No. 8 ranked team in the nation remains locked in a battle for first place in the Canada West conference.
 
UNBC meanwhile, falls to 2-5-0 on the season as the team from Prince George battled hard throughout the game despite being outshot 19-4 in the contest. All four of UNBC's shots came in the second half with the team showing resiliency throughout the contest.
 
"We stuck to our game model and continued to play hard, the only way we are going to grow is if we stick to it," said Timberwolves head coach Neil Sedgwick. "If we change because we are up against a tier one opponent then we are not going to grow and get to that point. UVic is obviously a top program but we came out and did some good things."
 

Emily Lieuwen added the other goal for UVic, as the team from Victoria scored twice in the first half before cruising to the victory in the second.
 
The tone was set for the game from the very beginning, with UVic maintaining possession of the ball and pressing high up the pitch to win it back immediately after losing it.
 
That pressure paid off when Kilbey scored in just the seventh minute of play after forcing a mistake from the Timberwolves defenders before calmly passing the ball into the back of an open net.
 
"She is doing well to finish them, it's a complete team effort," said David of Kilbey. "The first goal she got was on her own, she did well to press the defender and created the chance for herself."
 
Adding another goal in the second half, Kilbey has now scored eight goals in the eight games the Vikes have played.
 
"It feels really good, I was lucky to press and put the first one away but all the other ones have been set up for me by teammates," said Kilbey. "I can't do it alone obviously but it feels good to be getting on the board scoring goals because that's what I like to do."
 
It doesn't get any easier for UNBC this weekend as the team now travels to Vancouver for a game against first place UBC on Sunday, Oct. 1.
 
"We need to not concede some of the knock down goals and things where we caused problems for ourselves, but this is a maturing team and you are going to get some of those mistakes," said Sedgwick of the upcoming UBC contest. "We will have to be good defensively and win the races because they have some weapons upfront and be tight in the midfield to keep ourselves organized."
 
The Vikes are back in action tomorrow inside Centennial Stadium for a 5 p.m. game against the MacEwan Griffins.
