WINNIPEG – The University of Manitoba Bisons fell 1-0 to the University of Alberta Pandas in women's soccer at the West Turf Fields on Saturday, Sept. 23.

With the loss, the Bisons fall to 1-3-1 and the Alberta Pandas move to 3-1-1 in Canada West play.

The Pandas got their lone goal in the second half, when Brooke Lang headed home a Jamie Pasemko corner in the 72nd minute.

"One open player and she put it in. These teams if you give them one chance, they take advantage of it," Bison head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas said post game.

The first half started off slow, with both teams feeling each other out. The Pandas had a great chance when Morgen Corbett got on the end of a ball sent over the top but she sent it over the net. Corbett had another shot go high and wide in the 36th minute.

Right before the halftime whistle, the Pandas had a glorious scoring chance. Off a corner kick, the ball flew off a Panda and off the crossbar. Panda forward Karissa McNutt fired the rebound up and off the crossbar again. The ball ended up in a flurry of legs in the six-yard box but Bison goalkeeper Justina Jarmoszko managed to keep the ball out.

"Justina has been really consistent in most of the matches. She made some great saves to keep us in the game," Martinez Lagunas said.

After getting pushed around in the first half, the Bisons had some chances of their own in the second half. Bison midfielder and captain Amanda Wong had a free kick go off the cross bar in the 46th minute. A few minutes later, Florin Wagner whipped in a low free kick, but Panda goalkeeper Cassie Bazzarelli was equal to the task.

Right before the Pandas goal, Jarmoszko made another goal line clearance to keep the scores level. Lang headed the Pandas opener the next corner kick, and the Pandas managed to suffocate the Bisons for the final 15 minutes, preventing Manitoba from making any type of comeback.

The Bisons will host the Mount Royal Cougars at the West Turf Fields on Sunday Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. CT, while the Alberta Pandas will play the Winnipeg Wesmen at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex at 2 p.m. CT.
