WSOC: Spartans top Pronghorns in Sunday action

Brittney Nyrose, Pronghorn Athletics

Lethbridge - TWU's Danae Derksen scored her first goal of the season in the early minutes of the match and Jenaya Robertson doubled the Spartan's lead in the 20th minute with her second of the year, putting the Spartans in control of the game early on.

The Pronghorns came into the game with some momentum, following a 5-0 win over the Fraser Valley Cascades the day before.  The Spartans were looking for a strong finish on their weekend road-trip to the prairies, after they met the Calgary Dinos on Saturday and lost 3-0.

The Trinity Western Spartans came out sharp, scoring the first goal of the game only thirteen minutes in.  Danae Derksen picked up her first of the season with a well-placed header off the corner kick.

The Spartans would continue the pressure, with another close chance just minutes after, but 'Horns goaltender Micaela Stone was able to make the save.

The score didn't stay at 1-0 for long before the Spartans would pick up another. In the 20th minute the Spartans struck again as Seina Kashima passed the ball up the middle to Jenaya Robertson who slid it past the 'Horns goaltender.

'Horns forward Kayla Blacquiere tried to answer back at the other end with a close scoring chance, but couldn't quite get it past keeper Christina Oliverio.

Just before the first half ended Blacquiere had another near miss on a goal, her shot went high of the net and bounced off the football uprights.

Entering into the second half of the game, there was a lot of back and forth action in the midfield but there were few scoring opportunities for either side as both sides played well defensively.

Blacquiere had another close chance with a beautiful move and strike just outside the penalty area, but the Spartan's keeper was equal to the task and was able to tap it just above the crossbar to hold the 'Horns scoreless.

The 'Horns continued to battle but with the 2 goal lead the Spartans were able to keep their lead by playing smart and not taking unnecessary risks at the back.

With the win, the Spartans improve their record to 2 wins and 2 losses, whereas the 'Horns loss puts them to 1-2-1 for the season.

Both teams will be on the road next weekend with the Spartans taking on the UNBC Timberwolves and the MacEwan Griffins, while the Pronghorns will travel to Saskatchewan to play the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the University of Regina Cougars.
