Lethbridge – Playing their first home game of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's soccer team was full marks for their effort in a convincing 5-0 win over the Fraser Valley Cascades.

With the win the 'Horns improve to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Cascades fall to 0-2-1.

"It was a great team effort today from everyone," said head coach Fred Trinh. "We played as a team and it is nice to be rewarded for an effort like that."

Kayla Blacquiere led the Pronghorns with two goals and an assist, while Lindsay Amatto also scored twice and Nikki Furukawa picked up a single.

Micaela Stone earned her second consecutive clean sheet making two saves, while her counterpart Joven Sandhu made six saves in the loss.

Pronghorns opened the scoring 17 minutes in, Kayla Blacquiere fed the ball through the middle of the field to Lindsay Amatto, who made no mistake for her first of the season.

Keeping the pressure on the Cascades, Erica Augsten nearly doubled the lead only two minutes later but Joven Sandhu made a spectacular save to push the ball over the crossbar.

Kayla Blacquiere and Nikki Furukawa both had great looks as well to increase the lead but couldn't capitalize. Blacquiere was turned away by Sandhu, and Furukawa just missed the far post on a cut back. However, before the half was out Furukawa and Blacquiere teamed up to give the Pronghorns a two goal lead. Furukawa found Blacquiere in the middle of the field, where she was able to place the ball over top of Sandhu.

Shot attempts favored the Pronghorns 11-4 and the Pronghorn lead could have been more if not for the play of Sandhu, who made five saves in the half.

Out of the restart, the Cascades had the first two chances with Brittney Zacharuk and Harneet Dadrao getting good looks but both missed the net.

The Cascades came close again to cut into the Pronghorn lead. 'Horns defender played the ball back to Micaela Stone and she narrowly beat a Cascade attacker to the ball.

After coming so close to having their lead cut back to one, Blacquiere was back at it for the Pronghorns picking up her second of the match. Kayla Blacquiere out-raced two Cascade defenders for a partial break and was able to slide a shot past a charging Sandhu.

Furukawa added to the Pronghorn lead in the 71st minute, just beating Sandhu to a loose ball and chipping it past the Cascade keeper.

The offensive onslaught continued for the Pronghorns, as Amatto picked up her second of the match in the 81st minute.

At full time, the Pronghorns finished the day outshooting the Cascades 16-7 but the Cascades had seven corners to the Pronghorns four.

The Pronghorns will conclude the weekend tomorrow, hosting the Trinity Western Spartans. The Cascades will head to Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos to wrap up their road trip. Kick-off for both games are slated for noon. The Pronghorn-Spartan game will be webcast on www.canadawest.tv.
