WSOC : Vikes rally in second half to beat the Bisons

VICTORIA – Three goals in fifteen minutes led the UVic Vikes women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over a resilient Manitoba Bisons team in Victoria on Sep. 15.

Goals from Kiara Kilbey, Georgia Bignold and Rachel Baird came in minutes 63 through 77 for the Vikes. Hailey Lavarias scored the lone goal of the game for Manitoba in the 13th minute of play.

The Vikes held a vast majority of possession throughout the game; outshooting the Bisons 25-6, while also compiling 18 corner kicks to the Bisons one.

It was the Bisons who got the board first though. The visitors from Manitoba did well to soak up some early Vikes pressure and then made sure to make their first scoring opportunity of the game count.

Lavarias let go a shot from just outside the eighteen yard box that took a deflection off a Vikes defender and looped over Puck Louwes and into the Vikes net.

UVic kept the pressure up throughout the first half but a combination of some great goaltending from Justina Jamroszko, who made 12 saves in the game, and some strong Bisons defending gave the visiting team the lead at half time.

"We just had to go in at the half and talk about the things we needed to do in order to be successful, like attack the seams and that's what we were able to do," said Vikes head coach Tracy David. "I'm happy that we were able to create a lot of chances."

The breakthrough finally came in the 63rd minute for the Vikes, when Kilbey notched her third goal of the season. Stephanie Badilla Gutierrez whipped in a corner kick and Kilbey was able to clean up the garbage in the ensuing scramble.

"I think our team has a lot of belief and needed to increase the ante a little bit," said David. "It was really important for Kiara to get us on the scoreboard because then we knew that the monkey was off our back and then the goals started coming."

Boosted by the goal from Kilbey, the Vikes then poured two more goals into the net in quick succession.  Bignold and Baird sealed the game for the Vikes as the 3-1 lead was too much for the Bisons to overcome.

Both these teams are back in action tomorrow.

The Bisons will head to Vancouver to take on the UBC T-Birds at 5:30 p.m., while the Vikes will remain in Victoria to play the Winnipeg Wesmen at 5:00 p.m.
