WSOC: Wesmen, Cougars battle to 1-1 draw

WINNIPEG, MB - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen wrapped up their home opening weekend by recording a 1-1 draw with the University of Regina Cougars Saturday night at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Sally Bachmann scored in the 39th minute for the Cougars. Wesmen midfielder Maeghan Lindsay notched her second goal of the young season in the 44th minute of play.

Winnipeg with the tie completes opening weekend play with a 0-1-1- record. Regina picks up their second straight draw to sit at 0-0-2.

The Wesmen had a glorious chance in the opening half when Lindsay raced in on the right side and got a quality shot away but Cougars goalkeeper Savannah Williams came up with the save.

First year Wesmen striker Shae-Lynn Dodds almost opened the scoring in the 21st minute as she raced down a loose ball with a wide open net only to have Williams race out and grab the ball at the last second.

The Cougars had a chance in the 31st minute when third year forward Sydney Langen beat Wesmen goalkeeper Madison Fordyce only to have her shot ring off the left post.

Regina found the back of the net in the 39th minute when Sally Bachmann's header off a Brianna Wright corner kick beat Fordyce to make the score 1-0 Regina.

Winnipeg responded in the 44th minute when Lindsay beat Williams with a low shot off a free kick to tie the score at 1-1.

Both teams had chances in the second half only to have Williams and Fordyce stop all shots that came their respective ways. 1

Winnipeg finished with a 16-10 advantage in total shots. Williams made seven saves for the Cougars while Fordyce made four saves for the Wesmen.

The Wesmen will head to the West coast for games next week against UBC on Friday and Victoria on Saturday. Regina will be home to UBC Okanagan (Saturday) and Thompson Rivers on Sunday.
