VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes wrapped up a dominant 2018 Canada West Rugby 7s Series with three more wins on Sunday Feb. 25 at Wallace Field, moving them to a perfect record of 6-0 in the Victoria leg of the series, 18-0 overall, and capturing both the Victoria tournament title as well as the conference 7s banner in the process.

The Vikes capped off their season by scoring 15 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the 2017 conference champions, the Calgary Dinos, by a score of 22-5 in what was another monumental clash between the two teams.

“That was our goal coming into the series and we knew that we had the athletes to accomplish it,” said Vikes head coach Brittany Waters on the team’s undefeated season. “It was really important for us to take it one game at a time, one tournament at a time, and just keep improving on our performances.”

Calgary’s record of 4-1-1 in Victoria was good enough to put them second in both the tournament and the overall standings, while the Lethbridge Pronghorns earned third-place in the conference by finishing fourth on the weekend. Rebecca Gannon scored two tries for Lethbridge in their 31-19 victory over the Alberta Pandas to give the Pronghorns the head-to-head tiebreaker between the two teams that finished with identical records of 3-3 in Victoria.

The UBC Thunderbirds (3-2-1) secured fourth-place in the conference thanks an outstanding second half comeback against the Dinos. Nicole Mallow crossed the try line right as time expired to knot the game at 10-10 and ensure the Thunderbirds a third-place finish in Victoria, giving them just enough points to edge out the fifth-place Pandas in the conference standings.

The Fraser Valley Cascades (1-5) and the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (0-6) round out both the tournament and conference standings with finishes of sixth and seventh respectively.

Fraser Valley ends the season with two victories, both of which came at the expense of the WolfPack. Thompson Rivers continued to battle hard in their first ever season in the league and ensured that they wouldn’t be kept off the scoreboard in Victoria thanks to a try from Grace Campbell in their final game of the season.
