CALGARY- Saturday, at the Flames Community Arenas, the women's hockey Mount Royal Cougars and Regina Cougars played for the last time this regular season. Yesterday, Mount Royal narrowly took the win in double overtime, after Regina dominated the majority of the game. Saturday, the score finished 3-0 for Regina. Regina, like the day before, scored the first two goals of the game but this time around they held onto that lead and got the win.
Mount Royal forward Breanne Trotter said "Their defence was tough, and we were tired," in response to why the home team had a tough time getting a goal today.
Within just a minute, Regina's Emma Waldenberger was given a penalty, a precursor for the upcoming tension the rest of the game would possess. Regina quickly regained the momentum and put the pressure on Mount Royal and goalie Zoe De Beauville. This resulted in the first goal of the game for Regina, with a shot from Chelsea Hallson beating De Beauville. Shortly thereafter the Cougars in green swarmed Mount Royal's net, Emily Middagh brought her team up to 2-0.
The score would remain that way until the third period. After a misdirected pass from Mount Royal's Tianna Ko, Regina forward Ireland South took the puck and ran with it, bumping up Regina's lead to 3-0. Mount Royal took aim again and again at Regina's net but just couldn't score.
The Booster Juice Player of the Game from Mount Royal was Shawni Rodeback. The Booster Juice Player of the Game from Regina was Morgan Baker. On Dec. 4 and 5 the Regina Cougars will go on to play the Lethbridge Pronghorns, while Mount Royal Cougars will play the UBC Thunderbirds.
