REGINA - Three goals within a two-minute span in the second period powered the UBC Thunderbirds to a 3-0 win over the University of Regina women's hockey team at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.

Emily Costales, Brie Bellerive and Kenzie Robinson scored for UBC, who improve to 6-2-2-3 with the win. Tory Micklash got the win in goal, stopping all 22 Cougar shots for her third shutout of the season. Jane Kish made 24 saves for Regina, including 13 in the first period.

After a scoreless opening period, the Thunderbirds exploded for three goals in less than two minutes early in the second period. Two of the goals were powerplay markers, the first of which came at the 5:20 mark. After Jaycee Magwood was sent off for a bodycheck, the UBC powerplay set up and it was Costales coming from behind the net to redirect a point shot past Kish.

Bellerive added to the lead 51 seconds later, as a Madison Patrick shot was handled by Kish but the fifth-year forward was left all alone in front to easily put home the rebound for her fourth of the season. UBC went back to the powerplay just five seconds after the goal was scored, and capitalized again. Robinson was the reason for UBC's powerplay success this time, tipping home a point shot from Rylind MacKinnon at the 7:10 mark.

Regina outshot UBC 10-5 in the final period, creating some chaos in front of the UBC goal a number of times. Micklash was up to the challenge in between the pipes, and the Thunderbirds blocked a handful of Cougar shots to keep the home team off the scoreboard.

The Cougars finished the night 0-for-6 on the powerplay, while UBC converted two of their six opportunities with the advantage.

The Cougars and Thunderbirds will battle again on Saturday afternoon, with a 3 p.m. puck drop at The Co-operators Centre.
