REGINA – The University of Regina women's hockey team scored two first-period goals and Morgan Baker kept the No. 10-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies off the scoreboard as the Cougars secured a 2-0 win at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.

Jaycee Magwood scored her third of the season just 88 seconds in to Friday's contest and Ireland South notched her first of the year at the 3:17 mark of the opening frame to build a 2-0 lead early.

Baker stopped all 19 shots she faced for her first win of the season and the second shutout of her career. Jasey Book made 18 saves for the Huskies, who have their four-game winning streak snapped and fall to 3-2-2-0.

The first goal was set up by Jordan Kulbida, who sent Magwood into the Huskie zone where she fought off a pair of Saskatchewan defenders before sliding a low shot past Book. South netted her first goal as a Cougar shortly after, scooping up a Saskatchewan turnover and going to the backhand to beat Book.

The game was a chippy one from there on, with the Cougars being whistled for seven minor penalties and the Huskies getting sent off for eight. Neither team could capitalize on the powerplay, though, as Saskatchewan was 0-for-6 and the Cougars were 0-for-5.

After the Cougars put 10 shots on goal in the second period, the third period produced less scoring opportunities. The two teams combined for just seven shots in the final frame and even with Book out of the goal for an extra attacker the Huskies couldn't piece together many chances.

The Cougars (4-2-0-1) and Huskies will square off again on Saturday night, back in Saskatoon at Merlis Belsher Place. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
