SASKATOON – The first half of the season came to an end on a positive note for a University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball that dominated the UNBC Timberwolves from beginning to end, en route to an 83-47 victory on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court Nov. 30.
 
The win was the sixth in a row for the Huskies, as they will enter the break first in the Canada West with a record of 10-2. Despite the back-to-back losses in Saskatoon, it was still a positive first half of the season for the Timberwolves who are currently sixth in the conference with a record of 6-4.
 
It was a complete effort on both ends of the court for Saskatchewan. Not only did the Huskies hit 44.3 per cent of their shots and hold UNBC to just 28.3 per cent of theirs, the home team also picked up 30 more rebounds than UNBC on the night.
 
Kyla Shand had her best game of the season for the Huskies, finishing the night with 16 points and five rebounds. Sabine Dukate, Ashley De Sousa Martins and Megan Ahlstrom added 15, 11 and 10 respectively.
 
Maria Mongomo had a massive night for the Timberwolves, shooting 50 per cent from the floor, good for 28 points. While Vasiliki Louka may have had a quiet night filling the net, the Canada West leading rebounder pulled down 13 of the team's 22 boards.
 
The Huskies set the tone for the rest of the night right from the start of the game, scoring the first eight points of the contest and holding UNBC scoreless through the opening 4:30 of the game. Nine different players scored for Saskatchewan in the first as they jumped out to the 17-9 lead.
 
Both teams found their shooting stroke in the second quarter, with Saskatchewan hitting 47.4 per cent and UNBC 30.8. The Timberwolves were able to keep the lead at eight through the opening three minutes before a 17-8 Huskies' run opened up the gap. Shand scored nine points in the second to lead both teams.
 
With a 17-point lead heading into the second half, the Huskies kept their foot on the gas and outscored UNBC by 19 in quarters three and four to cruise to the victory.
