REGINA – It was a close game at the half, but the University of Regina's women's basketball team erupted in the final two quarters to take a 67-33 win over MacEwan on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

MacEwan led for much of the second quarter and by as many as five points after going up 22-17, but it was all Cougars from there. The home side finished the half on an 11-2 run to set the tone for what would come after halftime, as the Cougars outscored MacEwan 18-3 in the third quarter and 21-6 in the fourth to blow the game wide open.

"I was happy with our defensive effort, especially in the second half," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "We were really able to stretch out the game a bit in that third quarter. MacEwan's a very tough team defensively and we'll have to make some better decisions with the ball tomorrow against them."

MacEwan simply went ice cold in the second half as the Cougars ramped it up on the defensive end. The Griffins finished 2-for-31 from the field in the final two quarters and missed all nine of their three-point attempts as Regina outscored them 39-9 after the halftime break.

Kyanna Giles, Faith Reid, and Carolina Goncalves provided the majority of the offence for the Cougars. Giles and Reid both had a game-high 14 points, while Goncalves scored 13. As usual, most of Reid's production was from downtown as the second-year guard was 4-for-7 from three-point range.

Giles added 12 rebounds for a double-double, helping Regina to a 54-46 advantage on the glass in the win. The victory makes it five straight for the Cougars, who are now 7-2 in Canada West play this season.

Mackenzie Farmer and Shannon Majeau both had 10 points to lead MacEwan, which falls to 4-7 with the setback.

The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is again scheduled for 6:00.
