The Timberwolves veteran leadership reigned supreme on the night as they managed to sweep the University of Winnipeg Wesmen with a final score of 90-75 on Saturday, November 3rd at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.
The University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves came out hungry looking to maintain their unbeaten record Saturday night at the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre. The Timberwolves came out strong, led by veterans Vasiliki Louka and Maria Mongomo. The pair combined for 33 points, and 14 rebounds in the first half. But the University of Winnipeg Wesmen refused to go away, as they were looking for revenge on their B.C. counterparts. They too, were led by a veteran in Faith Hezekiah who went off for 21 points of her own, along with seven rebounds. The score at the end of the half read 46-40 for the Timberwolves in a tight affair.
A strong third quarter from the Timberwolves helped add to their lead going in to the fourth, as once again, Maria Mongomo came out firing. Her 11 points were a quarter-high, and her and-one to end the frame left the Timberwolves up 69-61 heading in to the fourth.
Faith Hezekiah continued to drive her team, but the Wesmen's efforts fell short as the Timberwolves began to pull away. The ever-consistent Timberwolves guard, Abby Gibb, began the half with several assists and a fantastic solo effort, which set the tone for the remainder of the quarter. The veteran leadership of the Timberwolves led to a final score of 90-75.
"We made too many errors. A lack of concentration on defence led to too many free throws and the game managed to slip away from us" said Hezekiah.
A fantastic night from Maria Mongomo helped prevail the Timberwolves to victory, her team-high 31 points, and 13 rebounds were enough to earn player of the game. Vasiliki Louka also added 26 points of her own, along with 14 rebounds.
"We knew today would be a different game because the fourth quarter gave them hope. We knew we had to come out with determination, and that's exactly what we did." said Mongomo.
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen were piloted by Faith Hezekiah who had a game high 33 points, and 12 rebounds. The Wesmen fall to 2-2 on the season, and will look to improve on that when they take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies next week.
The victory helps the Timberwolves remain unbeaten on the season, with a 4-0 record. They will look to extend that record when they take on the Trinity Western Spartans in two weeks time.
