WINNIPEG: The Winnipeg Wesmen are still trying to "find their way," according to their head coach, and the result is an 0-2 start to the Canada West conference season.

Amira Giannattasio scored 28 points to lead four Victoria Vikes in double figures and the visitors scored a weekend sweep with a 79-67 win over the Wesmen in a Canada West women's basketball game Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen, playing their first two conference games with a brand new point guard in Farrah Castillo, couldn't find their footing and found themselves behind early, trailing by as many as 21 in the third quarter before a late push tightened the scoreboard slightly.

Castillo, who has been called upon to replace two-time all-Canadian Antoinette Miller, scored a team- and career-high 24 to lead the Wesmen, who also got 21 points from Faith Hezekiah in falling to 0-2.

The Wesmen went 0-for-10 from three, while the Vikes were 10 of 26.

"We're still trying to find our way. We're still trying to show up and compete," Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay said. "AT times we do and we look really good, and at times we don't compete and play hard and look pretty bad. I think we're still trying to find who we are and I think we're seeing signs of it."

Ashlyn Day scored 16 for the Vikes, Aleah Ashlee added 15 and Katie Langdon dropped 10.

"I think it was a similar game to (Friday) night," Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair said. "Each team just kept taking turns getting momentum. I thought we fell victim to their zones, far too many turnovers, but when we played well is when we played together as a team, and when we didn't we kinda just went inward."

Both teams head west after this weekend: The Wesmen are at UNBC for their first road trip, while the Vikes head back for their home-openers next weekend against UBC.
