CALGARY – Hitting the century mark at home for Pack the Jack night put the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team well on their way to victory as they dominated their crosstown rival Mount Royal Cougars 107-54 Thursday night.
The Dinos bested the Cougars in almost every category, offensively and defensively, capitalizing on Mount Royal's 36 turnovers to put up their largest regulation point total since Oct. 27, 2000.
The Dinos started their attack right out of the gates nailing three consecutive baskets from three-point territory to take a quick 9-0 lead. The Calgary offence had opened the flood gates and their defence stepped up as well, holding the Cougars to single digit scoring in two of the four quarters.
"Defensively we came to play in the full court," said Calgary head coach Damian Jennings, "and that generated a lot of offence for us."
Calgary's win streak now jumps to six as well as well as their overall record, improving to 14-5. Mount Royal still has only one win on the season, falling to 1-18.
A 28-9 first quarter lead definitely helped the Dinos, putting Mount Royal into a hole early on. The second quarter didn't look much better for Mount Royal as they were only able to add nine points to the scoreboard.
Calgary pounced on the Cougars' 21 first half turnovers, taking a 54-17 lead into halftime.
The game's tempo did not change going into the second half as the Dinos added an additional 25 points in the third. The game was all but over going into the fourth, with Calgary shooting an impressive 51.3 percent from the field throughout the half.
Second year Bobbi Jo Colburn had a career-high 30 points to lead her team. Brianna Ghali, Erin McIntosh, and Shannon Hatch also contributed to the scoreboard, putting in 14 each.
Mount Royal standout Becky Nash also had a solid night with 24 points.
The Crowchild Classic women's basketball series will continue Friday night at MRU's Kenyon Court to conclude the regular season.
