WBB: Wesmen overcome a slow start to pull off the win!

WINNIPEG – The Wesmen Women's Basketball returned home after two weeks on the road to face the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and pulled off the comeback win 71 – 78.

The Wesmen showed some rust on home court and played a less than inspired first quarter shooting 4 for 18. Meanwhile, UBC held a hot hand in the first, making 10 for 19. Leading the way for UBC was 3rd year Maddison Penn with 14 points. The Thunderbirds kept Canadian West's leading scorer Antoinette Miller to 3 points. At the end of the quarter, UBC was up 25 – 12.

The first quarter was a wake up for the Wesmen, if they continued to play an uninspiring basketball it would be a long night. Leaning heavily on Miller and 3rd-year player Faith Hezekiah in the second quarter, the Wesmen battled back. Miller was able to unload and put up 11 points in the quarter. Hezekiah, who was in foul trouble in the first quarter with three fouls, also found her range and scored 8 points in the quarter. The Wesmen at the half managed to take the lead 41 – 38.

Coming out of the break, it was UBC that set the tone for the second half. Leading the way for UBC was 3rd-year guard Jessica Hanson who scored 12 points in the quarter. Antoinette Miller led the Wesmen with 9 points. At the end of three, UBC was back on top 64 – 58.

In the final quarter, it was the Wesmen that dominated the play. The return of Skylar Boulanger from injury was a helping factor in neutralizing UBC forwards. Boulanger pulled down 9 rebounds in the game and had 10 points. In the end, the Wesmen outscored the Thunderbirds 20 – 7.  The final score 78 - 71

Antoinette Miller who played the entire game led the all scores in the game with 31 points, 9 assist, 9 steals and 7 rebounds. Faith Hezekiah was second in team scoring with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. First-year players Robyn Boulanger and Jessica Dyck each scored 9 points.

The Thunderbirds were led by Maddison Penn's double-double scoring with 31 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Jessica Hanson finished off the game with 18 points.

With the win the Wesmen's record improves to 5 - 4, while UBC's record goes to 4 - 5

The two teams return to action Saturday at 5:00 pm at the Duckworth Centre.
