WBB: Cougars use late surge to take out Fraser Valley

REGINA, Sask. – The top-ranked University of Regina women's basketball team trailed by as many as five points in the fourth quarter, but used a big late run to take out a gritty Fraser Valley team for a 68-60 win on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Fraser Valley scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter, turning what had been a five-point Regina lead into a five-point lead for the visitors. But the Cascades scored only one more field goal in the final six minutes of the contest, and the Cougars got a pair of clutch Michaela Kleisinger three-pointers down the stretch to lift them to victory.

"I was very happy with that win as we found a way to get it done on a night where we were short staffed and didn't shoot the ball well," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "There are going to be moments like that in any season, and teams are defined by how they respond to those moments. We'll definitely need to be better next weekend against UNBC."

Kleisinger finished 5-for-7 from the field, all of which came from three-point range as she matched Kyanna Giles with 15 points. Giles also had 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Kyia Giles and Charlotte Kot both chipped in with 11 points. Kot also grabbed seven rebounds in the win.

Also short staffed on the night was Fraser Valley, which used only seven players over the course of the game. Taylor Claggett led UFV with a double-double, scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sara Simovic was 4-for-6 from three-point range and also had 15 points for UFV while also dishing out a team-leading four assists.

The Cougars, who have now won 13 consecutive games over U SPORTS opposition and are off to a 4-0 start in Canada West play, will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games against UNBC in Prince George, B.C.

Fraser Valley (2-4) is now back at home for the next two weekends, first against Winnipeg (Nov. 17/18) and then against UBC Okanagan (Nov. 24/25).
