PRINCE GEORGE, BC -

The UNBC Timberwolves Women's Basketball made it two wins in as many days against the UBC Thunderbirds, topping the visitors 79-61 at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.

The Timberwolves came out firing, including a pair of triples from Maria Mongomo, but an 18-4 T-Birds run made it 22-14 in favour of UBC after ten minutes.

"They give me so much confidence, and I always feel free to shoot," said Mongomo postgame. "They support me and I support them."

The strong finish by the T-Birds in the first did not phase the Timberwolves as they started the second quarter on a 11-1 run, helping to put them ahead going into the third with a lead of 36-34.

Freshman Alina Shakirova continued her stellar defensive work from Friday, going head to head with UBC leading scorer Maddison Penn. The native of Moscow, Russia hounded Penn all over the court to tremendous results.

Using a loud Prince George crowd to their advantage, the Timberwolves played their game to perfection over the final twenty minutes. They outscored UBC 34-27 to solidify their second win of the season.

Maria Mongomo finished this game with an impressive 32 points, including 8 of 12 from beyond the arc. Vasiliki Louka chipped in with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists.

"We had something to prove with this team, after last year's playoffs," said Mongomo. "After we won yesterday, we just believed. We did it as a team."

Jessica Hanson paced the Thunderbirds with 19 points, while Penn was quiet, adding just seven points and five rebounds.

With the victory, UNBC improves to 2-4, while the Thunderbirds fall to 3-3.

Mongomo says with these victories, the Timberwolves' 0-4 start is in the rearview mirror.

"We just wanted to forget, and just play. We knew we could have won those games, so we just forgot about the past, and gave everything."
