REGINA, Sask. – The No. 1-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team controlled from start to finish on Friday night, ending up with a 100-61 win over the University of the Fraser Valley at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Kyanna Giles was dominant in the win, leading all players with 27 points and adding five rebounds to help Regina improve its Canada West record to 3-0 and extend its winning streak over U SPORTS opposition to 12 games.

Fraser Valley falls to 2-3 with the loss.

The Cougars set the tone in the first half with two big runs that gave them a stranglehold on the game. They went on a 20-2 run in the first quarter, then reeled off 13 consecutive points in the second to help them build up a 28-point lead at halftime. Fraser Valley opened the second half on a 16-6 run to cut the Regina lead to 18, but that was as close as the visitors would come as the Cougars poured in another 13 straight points to put the game away.

"UFV's strength is in the half court, so we wanted to make it a fast game and I was happy with our pace of play tonight," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "We got good contributions from everyone, especially when we had to play some different lineups when Christina (McCusker) went down."

McCusker appeared to suffer a lower-body injury late in the first half after getting tangled up with UFV's Amanda Thompson and did not return, finishing with eight points, four rebounds, and four blocks in just 14 minutes of work.

Three other U of R players joined Giles in double figures in points, including Charlotte Kot with 14, rookie Faith Reid with 12, and Sara Hubenig with 10. The Cougars shot 50.7% in the win, in large part to Giles going 10-for-15 from the field.

Sara Simovic had 16 points to lead Fraser Valley while Taylor Claggett scored 14, Katelyn Mallette had 12, and Jessica Zawada added 11. Claggett and Mallette both tied for the game high with eight rebounds.

Regina and Fraser Valley will close out the weekend series on Saturday night (6:00) at the CKHS.
