WBB: Pronghorns pull away in the fourth to earn sweep

Lethbridge – A night after nearly everything went their way, the Lethbridge Pronghorns showed some resiliency and beat an experienced Brandon Bobcats for the second consecutive night, 87-82.

 

In the season opener a night ago, the Pronghorns defensive effort spearheaded the offence and led to the Pronghorns dropping the Bobcats 84-58.

 

The guard duo of Kacie Bosch and Zoe Dahl led the Pronghorns attack with 15 points each. Bosch also added seven rebounds and three assists. Katie Keith also has a strong performance for the Pronghorns with a 13 point, six rebound night.

 

Bobcat leader Keisha Cox led all scorers with 20 points, which was aided by a 10-for-12 performance from the foul line. Cox also added six rebounds and five assists to her stat line. Adrianna Proulx and Kinsley Ransom added 15 and 13 respectively

 

Throughout the night, the Pronghorns and Bobcats battled tooth and nail, the lead changed 18 times and the game was tied on 13 other occasions. The difference on this night was the final quarter as the Pronghorns pulled away late.

 

"Gutsy, gritty victory over a talented Brandon team," said head coach Dave Adams. "Great push in the fourth quarter and I loved our energy and effort to close out the game."

 

The Pronghorns took a 22-19 lead though the opening quarter, while the Bobcats turned the tables in the second, outscoring the Pronghorns 23-18 and taking a narrow 42-20 lead into half.

 

Aided by a scorching 58% shooting in the second quarter, the Bobcats finished the first half hitting at a 48.3% clip, while the Pronghorns ended the first half shooting 37.8% after a tough second quarter.

 

The back-and-forth play continued into the third quarter and with both teams hitting for 23 points, the Bobcats carried their two point lead (65-63) from the opening half into the final quarter.

 

With the game tied at 73 and just more than five minutes to play, Kacie Bosch hit two free throws that spearheaded a 12-5 Pronghorns run and a seven point lead, one that they would not relinquish.

 

Statistically, the Bobcats shot the ball better than the Pronghorns, 44.8% to 36.3% but the biggest contributing factor in the Pronghorn win was rebounding. The Pronghorns won the rebounding battle, 50-39, including 18 offensive rebounds that lead to valuable extra possessions for the Pronghorns.

 

The Pronghorns will head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Edmonton to face the MacEwan Griffins. Next up for the Bobcats is their home opener, hosting the Victoria Vikes.
