EDMONTON - For the third time in team history, and second in four years, the Saskatchewan Huskies are champions of Canada West women's basketball, following a 67-56 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday in the gold medal game of the conference Final Four tournament at Saville Community Sports Centre.

The Huskies last won on home court in 2010-11. The title also marks the 100th in history for Huskie Athletics varsity programs. In their fourth-straight year at the tournament, the Cascades earn conference silver but will also head to the CIS national championship with the Huskies, going next week in Windsor.

Canada West MVP and Defensive Player of the Year Dalyce Emmerson guided the Huskies to the win, recording a double-double with 19 points and an impressive 22 rebounds. The third-year post missed a triple-double by two blocks, tallying eight in the matchup. Fourth-year point guard Kabree Howard led the Huskies in scoring with 20 points and added six assists.

Nataliia Gavryliuk led the Cascades with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Sarah Wierks tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Wierks added another 10 points for Fraser Valley.

Both Saskatchewan and Fraser Valley qualify for the CIS Championship in Windsor, March 14-16. It will be the Huskies seventh trip to the CIS Championship in the last nine seasons. Seeding and schedule for the CIS event will be released on Sunday.

EDMONTON - Earning their 10th bronze medal in team history, and third in six years, the Alberta Pandas kept their chances for the CIS Final 8 Tournament "wild card" berth alive with a 55-50 victory over the Regina Cougars in the bronze medal game of the conference Final Four tournament, Saturday at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

The wild card will go to either #2 Saint Mary's or #3 Alberta. Saint Mary's won the AUS final on Sunday, 76-63 over St. FX, meaning Alberta will get the wild card and head to nationals that start next week in Windsor.

Fourth-year forward Saskia van Ginhoven had a game-high 16 points for Alberta while fourth-year guard Sally Hillier recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Guard Janine Guijt, part of the Canada West All-Rookie Team, put up a dozen points for the Cougars, sophomore forward Charlotte Kot netting nine points and 15 boards for the visitors while third-year post Alyssia Kajati also fell just short of a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds.

EDMONTON - At the Saville Community Sports Centre on Friday, the Fraser Valley Cascades upend the host and the regular season champion Alberta Pandas, 66-56 in the second semifinal of the Canada West Final Four.

The win advances the Cascades to the Canada West championship game on Saturday, squaring off against the Saskatchewan Huskies at 5 p.m. The victory also advances Fraser Valley to the CIS Final 8 tournament that begins next week in Windsor.

Alberta will play in the bronze medal game on Saturday against the Regina Cougars, game time at 7 p.m. There is also a "wild card" berth available to the CIS Final 8, and both the Pandas and Cougars could be in the running, depending on scores from across the country.

Canada West Second Team All-Star Aieisha Luyken had a game-high 29 points, including 11 of Fraser Valley's 19 points in the crucial final quarter, while second-year forward Nataliia Gavryliuk recorded nine points and nine rebounds.

Andria Carlyon, named a First Team All-Star earlier this week, netted a double-double for the Pandas, with 17 points and 10 boards, while fourth-year guard Saskia Van Ginhoven added 13 points and three assists.

EDMONTON - In snapping the Regina Cougars' 21-game winning streak, the Saskatchewan Huskies extended their modest winning streak to three, taking a 64-52 decision to upset the higher seed in the first semifinal of the Canada West Final Four at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton on Friday night.

The win advances the Huskies to the Canada West championship game on Saturday, meeting the winner of the second semi-final happening later this evening. The victory also advances Saskatchewan to the CIS Final 8 tournament that begins next week in Windsor. Regina will play in the bronze medal game on Saturday against the other team in the second semi-final.

Leading the Huskies tonight was the 2013-14 Canada West Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Dalyce Emmerson, netting 17 points and seven rebounds while fourth-year guard Riley Humbert added 10 points, three boards, and three assists.

Claiming a spot on the Canada West All-Rookie Team, guard Janine Guijt had a game-high 20 points for the Cougars, sophomore Charlotte Kot chipping in nine points in Regina's first loss since mid-November.
