REGINA – The Regina Cougars were given all they could handle by the pesky Brandon Bobcats, but a huge fourth quarter pushed the #4 Cougars to an 88-63 win at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
The Cougars (20-2) were led by a career-high 22 points by Madi Docherty, who also led all players with five assists and pulled down seven rebounds for the U of R. Three other players scored in double figures, including Jennilea Coppola with 14 points.
 
Cooke was on fire for much of the game, hitting six three pointers – a couple of which were from well beyond the three-point arc – and finishing with a game-high 34 points. She also tied Stephanie Haynes for the team high with seven rebounds and led the Bobcats with four assists and three steals.
 
Brandon finishes the season with a 6-16 record as the Bobcats place sixth in the final Prairie Division standings.
 
The quarter-final series will be held next Friday, Saturday, and – if a third game is needed – on Sunday at the CKHS. All games will tip off at 7 p.m.

VANCOUVER – Kris Young and Harleen Sidhu both surpassed the 20-point mark to lead the #9 UBC Thunderbirds to a 79-69 victory over the Victoria Vikes to clinch second place in the Canada West Pacific Division and home-court advantage in the quarter-finals of the league playoffs.

The T-Birds finish the regular season at 16-6 while the Vikes will place third in the division with a record of 15-7.

Young scored 30 points and 12 rebounds while Sidhu had 20 points and nine boards.

For the Vikes, Jessica Renfrew and Shaylyn Crisp had 15 points each while Jenny Lewis and Sarah Semeniuk chipped in with 12 and 10, respectively.

The victory means UBC will host a Canada West Quarter-Final series in two weeks' time against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Victoria will open the playoffs by traveling to Regina to face the Cougars.

At the end of the game, the members of UBC's 2003-04 CIS championship-winning team were honoured 10 years after they won the school's first national title in three decades.

EDMONTON - Fourth-year guard Sally Hillier picked the perfect moment to bank her only points of the game, late in the final quarter as the #3 Alberta Pandas defeated the #6 Saskatchewan Huskies 70-60 on Saturday.
 
With the win, Alberta finishes the regular season with a 20-2 record, as well as on a 19-game win streak. They will now host a best-of-three quarter-final series against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, beginning on February 28 at the Saville Community Sports Centre on the U of A's South Campus.
 
Saskatchewan, meanwhile, finishes the regular season at 17-5 and in third place in the Prairie Division of Canada West. They will take on the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver, also opneing on February 28.

ABBOTSFORD, BC — The Fraser Valley Cascades (17-5) turned it on in the third quarter to beat the Trinity Western Spartans (5-17) by a score of 55-39 on Saturday at the Envision Athletic Centre.

The Cascades clinched first in the Pacific Division on Thursday. The Spartans fall to sixth in the Canada West and miss the playoffs.

Nataliia Gavriliuk had 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Sarah Wierks scored 12 and added seven rebounds.

The Spartans were led by Laurissa Weigl with 12 points and Chantelle Martin with 11.

KAMLOOPS, BC — The Thompson Rivers WolfPack will be going into the 2013-14 Canada West playoffs on a three game  winning streak.  The WolfPack closed out the regular season at home on Saturday with a 72-65 victory over the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat.

The victory gave the ‘Pack a record of 13-9, good enough for fourth place in the Pacific Division. The Heat wind up seventh with a record of 3-19.

TRU was led in the contest by Taiysa Worsfold with 20 points.  Syd Williams contributed 12 points.

The Heat were led offensively by Emily Kanester, who had 18. Sarah Allison added 13 points.

The WolfPack will travel to the Prairies next week for the first round of the Canada West playoffs against either the Alberta Pandas or the Regina Cougars. This is the third straight year that TRU has made it to the post season on women's basketball.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars lost to the UNBC Timberwolves by a score of 86-79.

Fifth-years Mercedes VanKoughnett and Emily Kaehn each had strong outings to conclude their playing careers with the Timberwolves by scoring 22 and 20 points, respectively. Danica Rybachuk led the way for the Cougars with 20 points. Jordan McLean was second in scoring on the Cougars with 13 points.

The Cougars finish the season with a record of (2-19) and will finish in 8th place in the Pacific Division. The Timberwolves are now (5-16) and will finish in 5th place in the Pacific Division.

EDMONTON – Despite a second-half charge by the #6 Saskatchewan Huskies to force extra time, the #3 Alberta Pandas kept their winning streak and first-place position in Canada West alive on the strength of an 82-75 overtime victory, Friday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

Playing in her final regular season weekend, forward Andria Carlyon scored a double-double, netting 18 points and 10 rebounds while fourth-years Kendra Asleson and Saskia Van Ginhoven recorded 15 and 11 points, respectively.

The conference's second-best scorer, Dalyce Emmerson, had a double-double of her own, putting up a game-high 28 points and 11 boards while fourth-year point guard Kabree Howard added 13 points to the scoresheet and third-year guard Kelsey Trulsrud added 10.

The win improves Alberta's record to 19-2, staying atop the Canada West standings by holding the tie-breaker against the Regina Cougars, who also finish Friday with a 19-2 record. The loss drops Saskatchewan to 17-4, meaning the Huskies will finish third in the Prairie division.

Game two of the weekend series goes Saturday at 5 p.m.

REGINA – The Regina Cougars went on a huge run in the first quarter and never looked back in a 102-50 victory over Brandon on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
Katie Polischuk was hot from three-point range all night long, finishing 6-for-12 from downtown and 9-for-18 overall while scoring a game-high 24 points. Janine Guijt scored 19.
 
Cassie Cooke led Brandon (6-15) with 15 points and seven rebounds while Keegan Robinson was effective off the bench with 11 points, nine of which came off a trio of second-half three-pointers.
 
The win clinches at least a second-place finish in the division for the Cougars, who will host one of UBC, Victoria, or Thompson Rivers next weekend in a best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series.
 
The Cougars and Bobcats will finish the two-game set on Saturday at 5 p.m.

VICTORIA – All the pieces came together in the final home game for the Victoria Vikes, which knocked off their mainland rivals and the CIS #9 UBC Thunderbirds 85-73 onFriday at McKinnon Gym.

The Vikes women drained nine three-pointers to contribute to the night's Shoot for the Cure three-point challenge. The Vikes now tie the T-Birds in the standings, both with a 15-6 record in the Pacific Division.
 
Consistent performance from the entire bench is something that Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair knew she needed to get the job done and that's just what she got. Four players finished in double digits including Jenna Bugiardini with a game-high 25 points, while third year Shaylyn Crisp put up three treys to finish with 16 points.
 
UBC had an incredible shooting percentage of 56 per cent from beyond the arc thanks to five three pointers from Cassandra Knievel and a 22-point performance from Kris Young. Knievel finished with 20 points while guard Maggie Sundberg had 16.
 
The Vikes and T-Birds will close out their regular seasonon Saturday, in Vancouver at War Memorial Gym at 5 p.m. On the line will be second place in the Pacific Division but ultimately hosting right for the Canada West quarter-finals best-of-three series set for Feb. 28–March 1. WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen ended their season on a winning note after posting a 87-72 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Friday at the Dr.David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 26 points and three steals. Megan Noonan added 18 points and eight assists, while fifth year forward Alyssa Grant had 13 points in her final game as a Wesmen.

Robyn Eyer led Manitoba with 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers, whil Vanessa DeVries added 12 points.

The Wesmen finish the season with a record of 12-10. Manitoba ends their season with a record of 5-17.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars lost to the UNBC Timberwolves 51-49 on Friday.

Emily Kaehn led the way in scoring for the Timberwolves with 16, and Jen Bruce's clutch performance left her with 15 points at the end of the game. Carrie Campbell added 13 points, and Danica Rybachuk scored 12 for the Cougars.

Mount Royal now holds a record of (2-19). The Timberwolves are now (5-16).

Mount Royal and UNBC will play their finals games of the season on Saturday at Kenyon Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

Pronghorns-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – In her last game at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, Tamara Jarrett led the Calgary Dinos to their last win of the regular season against the Lethbridge Pronghorns, 67-53 on Thursday.

With the win, the Dinos clinched the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division. They will not know their opponent for the Canada West quarter-finals until the weekend's matches are over.

Jarrett's 23 points and seven rebounds were both game-high's. Point guard Kristie Sheils followed that up with an 18 point, five assist performance of her own. Hirons sunk four three-pointers for another 12 points for Calgary.

For the Pronghorns, Ali Cameron led the way with 18 points. Katlyn Olsen and Kim Veldman had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

With a clinched playoff spot, the Dinos will have to await the results of the weekend's matches before they will know their opponent. What they do know is that they will be heading out west. Possible opponents include Fraser Valley, UBC and Victoria.

The Canada West quarter-finals are set for February 28-March 2.

KELOWNA, BC - The hometown UBC Okanagan Heat hung tight with the visiting Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Thursday, but could not score in the final two minutes of the game to allow their opponents a 56-51 win.

Krystal Schouten wound up with a team-high 12 points in her final home effort in Heat uniform. Guards' Emily Kanester and Claire Elliott joined Schouten for Heat scorers in double-digits, with 10 and 11 points, respectively.

It was Kassie Colonna (17) and Jorri Doxbury (16) doing work for the ‘Pack, as they combined for 33 points. Sydney Williams was 0-10 from the floor for no points but was the leading board crasher with 10.

With the loss the Heat remain at three wins with a 3-18 record. The playoff bound WolfPack move to 12-9, locking up the fourth seed while still waiting to see who their first round opponent will be between Alberta, Regina and Saskatchewan.

Both teams will square off in their final games of the season Saturday in Kamloops for the return of the President's Cup—the first time it has been awarded since 2003 between the two schools. Tip-off at Thompson Rivers Gymnasium is at 12 p.m.

LANGLEY, BC – Playing in its final home game of the regular season, the Trinity Western Spartans dropped a 78-54 decision against #7 Fraser Valley on Thursday at the Langley Events Centre.
 
On a night when the Spartans honoured their graduating seniors, Spartans Janelle Traber  had a team-high 14 points and five rebounds while Holly Strom, who played just seven minutes in her return to the lineup after missing seven games due to injury, had two points and one rebound.
 
With just one game left on the schedule, the loss drops TWU's regular season record to 5-16 while the win improves the Cascades to 16-5 and puts them one game up on UBC (15-5) for top spot in the Pacific Division.
 
The Cascades were led by Aieisha Luyken, who had a game-high 22 points, all of which were tallied in the first half. Sarah Wierks added 12 points and a game-high six rebounds.

The Spartans are Cascades will play the back half of their home-and-home series on Saturday in Abbotsford at 5 p.m.

WINNIPEG - Robyn Eyer hit five three-pointers to lead the Manitoba Bisons to a thrilling 69-66 overtime victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Thursday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).

Eyer led the way with 15 points for the Bisons (5-16). Vanessa DeVries contributed with eight points and seven rebounds to earn the Duckworth Challenge Player of the Game award for Manitoba.

The loss officially eliminates Winnipeg (11-10) from Canada West playoff contention. Alyssa Grant had 11 points and was named the Duckworth Challenge Player of the Game for the Wesmen.

Manitoba and Winnipeg finish their 2013-14 regular seasons against each other on Friday at the Duckworth Centre at the University of Winnipeg.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Playing in their final home game of the Canada West season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn looked to play spoiler in the Calgary Dinos quest to lock down a playoff spot, but a poor third quarter for the 'Horns allowed the Dinos to walk away with the 67-57 win.
 
Fourth-year post Kim Veldman led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed seven boards, while Ali Cameron was the lone other Pronghorn to hit double digits, chipping in with 14 points. Playing in her final home game as a Pronghorn, Katlyn Olsen had six points, five rebounds, and five assists in the loss.
 
For the Dinos a trio led the way with Ashley Hirons scoring a team high 16 points. Kristie Sheils poured in 15 points and fifth-year guard Tamara Jarrett rounded out the three double-digit point performances with 12 of her own.
 
With the win, the Dinos improve to 12-9 and move one game closer to locking down the fourth and final playoff spot in the Prairie Division. The loss drops the 'Horns to 6-15.
 
The back half of the home-and-home series will go on Thursday at Jack Simpson Gymnasium in Calgary. Tip-off is set for 6:00p.m. and the game will be streamed live on http://canadawest.tv.
