WINNIPEG – Both the Manitoba Bisons and #7 Fraser Valley Cascades looked to bounce back after both teams suffered Friday night losses as they squared off on Saturday at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The Fraser Valley Cascades jumped out to an early lead and held on to best the Manitoba Bisons 85-68. The Cascades improve their season's record to 8-4. The Bisons have lost their ninth straight and drop to 3-9 on the season.

Forward Kayli Sartori turned in a great performance for the Fraser Valley Cascades, finishing with 18 points. Close behind her was Nicole Wierks, who finished the night with 12 points and five rebounds.
The Bisons finished the game shooting 45.9% from the field and were led by guard Robyn Eyer, who turned in a 19-point game for Manitoba.

The Bisons will travel to Brandon next week to play the Bobcats on Friday, January 17 in the first of their two-game weekend. Fraser Valley will travel to play the Thompson River WolfPack on Friday, January 17.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars lost 87-56 to their cross-town rivals the Calgary Dinos on Saturday at Kenyon Court.

Tamara Jarret and Jessica Theilen dropped 19 and 11 for the Dinos, while Danica Rybachuk added a team-high 17 points for the Cougars.

Mount Royal drops to 1-11 with the loss and the Dinos improve to 10-2.

Calgary will head home next weekend for two home games against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday and Saturday night. The Cougars will also host next weekend as UBC comes to Kenyon for games a weekend set starting Friday.

BRANDON, MB - The Brandon Bobcats earned their first home win of the 2013-14 season, besting the UBC Okanagan Heat 70-63 on Saturday.

Kaela Cranston led the way for the ‘Cats notching six three-pointers in a 25-point night. Cassie Cook notched 21 points and seven rebounds, with Stephanie Haynes just shy of a double-double adding 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
Shenelle Tamminen scored 18 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Heat, with both Jessica Jazdarehee and Emily Kanester notching 12 points.  
 
The win improves the Bobcats record to 3-9. The loss drops UBC-Okanagan to 2-10.
 
Up next for the Bobcats is a home series against the Manitoba Bisons on January 17th at the HLC. UBC Okanagain will face Trinity Western at home in Kelowna on January 17th

VICTORIA – The Victoria Vikes played their second game of the weekend, Saturday at McKinnon Gym, falling to the #3 Alberta Pandas 64-54 despite a strong second half from Vikes Jenna Bugiardini and Sarah Semeniuk.
 
Bugiardini rebounded from Friday's match with a strong outing to lead the Vikes with 20-points and six rebounds through four quarters, while teammate Sarah Semeniuk had a strong second half for her squad, posting 14 points and six rebounds.

Led by Kendra Asleson with 19 points and Saskia Van Ginhoven with 13.

The Vikes fall to 7-5 on the season. With the win, the Pandas jump to 10-2.
 
The Vikes will next head out on the road to face the UNBC Timberwolves in back-to-back matches, beginning Jan. 17 in Prince George, B.C. Game time for both matches is set for 6:00 p.m.

VANCOUVER – A late game comeback by the UBC Thunderbirds basketball team fell short as the hosts lost 55-53 to the #4 Saskatchewan Huskies at War Memorial Gym on Saturday.
 
Reigning Canada West MVP Kris Young had a spectacular game for the Thunderbirds, recording 24 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.
 
Adrienne Parkin, Maggie Sundberg and Harleen Sidhu all chipped in with six points.
 
Kabree Howard led Saskatchewan with 11 points while Desarae Hogberg and Kiera Lyons both had 10.
 
Both teams will travel to Calgary next weekend. UBC (7-5) will face Mt. Royal while Saskatchewan (11-1) will place the Dinos.

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - A second quarter surge lead the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 62-50 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday.

Kim Veldman led the now 5-7 Pronghorns with 19 points, while the Timberwolves fall with 4-8.

A second quarter surge gave the Pronghorns the lead they needed to stay ahead of the Timberwolves, outscoring their host 22-8. First year forward Mariah Miller started the Pronghorns momentum netting eight of her 12 points during the second period. Kim Veldman took over in the third adding 12 points after scoring only three in the first half. Veldman finished the game with a double-double, 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Lethbridge will host Alberta Pandas on Friday and Saturday next weekend. The Timberwolves return to the Northern Sport Centre next weekend when they host the Victoria Vikes January 17-18. All games can be viewed live at canadawest.tv.

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen capped off a perfect weekend after defeating the Trinity Western Spartans 80-61 on Saturday night at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Winnipeg defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday night by a score of 77-74.

Fourth year guard Stephanie Kleysen and second year guard Megan Noonan led the Wesmen with 20 points each. Kleysen also added seven assists and five steals.  Kelsey Ngo led Winnipeg in rebounds with seven.

Janelle Traber led the Spartans with 11 points. Kayla Gordon was the team leader in rebounds with eight.

Winnipeg evens its record at 6-6. Trinity Western falls to 2-10.

The Wesmen will be on the road in Regina next Friday and Saturday. Trinity Western will visit UBC Okanagan.

VANCOUVER – The CIS #3 Alberta Pandas edged the UBC Thunderbirds in all four quarters of play to leave Vancouver with a 56-47 victory on Friday night.

Alberta's Saskia Van Ginhoven scored 15 points in just 19 minutes to lead all players, while Sally Hillier chipped in with 11 coming off the bench.
 
For UBC, it was the tandem of Kris Young and Harleen Sidhu leading the way. Young had 14 points while Sidhu notched 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Alberta improves to 9-2 in regular season play and will visit Victoria on Saturday night, while 7-4 UBC will host #4 Saskatchewan at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.

VICTORIA – The Victoria Vikes were unable to pull off the upset over the visiting and CIS #4 Saskatchewan squad on Friday at McKinnon Gym.

The talented Huskies dominated 73-45 with three players in double-digits to improve to a near-perfect 10-1 record.
 
The Huskies' size and speed helped them cruise over the home team and a helpful 18 points from Kabree Howards and 17 points from Dalyce Emmerson was the icing on the cake. The Huskies shot 51 per cent from the field, out-rebounded the Vikes 42-23 and earned 36 points in the paint. Emmerson completed the double-double with 15 rebounds.
 
The Vikes' usual scorers were held quiet giving a team-high eight points to Jenny Lewis, while Cassandra Goodis and Jessica Renfrew each added seven. The Vikes were 30 per cent from the field and required 21 points from their bench, most of which came in the final frame.
 
The Vikes now fall 7-4 and will turn around to host the #3 Alberta Pandas on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in McKinnon Gym. The Huskies will head to the mainland to face the UBC Thunderbirds at 5:00 p.m. Games will be broadcast live at http://canadawest.tv.

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen erased a 19-point third quarter deficit to defeat the Fraser Valley Cascades 74-70 in overtime on Friday in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Winnipeg trailed 53-34 late in the third quarter but mounted a comeback for the ages to pull out the victory.

The Cascades held a 60-53 lead with just over two minutes to play in the fourth quarter when fourth year guard Stephanie Kleysen drained five straight free-throws to close the gap to 60-57.

Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with a double-double 20 points, 10 rebounds. She also dished out seven assists. Alyssa Grant added 17 points, including three-three pointers.

Nicole Wierks led the Cascades with a game-high 21 points. Courtney Bartel added 13 while Aieisha Luyken and Kaylie Sartori finished with 12 each.

Winnipeg with the victory improves to 5-6. Fraser Valley drops to 7-4.

Winnipeg will host Trinity Western on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Fraser Valley will play across town against the Manitoba Bisons.

WINNIPEG  - Losers of seven straight heading into the holiday break, the Manitoba Bisons were looking to turn the tides of the season back in their favour to start the second half, as they took on the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

A spirited second half by the Spartans, though, surged them to a 66-57 win for just their second victory of the season. Trinity Western moves to 2-9 with the win, while Manitoba falls to 3-8.

Trinity Western were led by a powerhouse performance by senior forward Holly Strom, who had 22 points, ten rebounds, four blocks and two steals for a complete performance.

The Bisons finish their weekend at home on Saturday against the Fraser Valley Cascades. Tip is at 5 p.m.

BRANDON, MB – The Brandon Bobcats welcomed the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Friday night, but were anything but welcoming in a hard-fought game that came down to the wire in which the ‘Pack came away with a 62-59 win.
 
The ‘Cats led by three at the half, in a game that featured seven lead changes, but were unable to maintain their lead.
 
Kassie Colonna contributed 17 points and five rebounds to the Wolfpack win. Taiysa Worsfeld notched a double-double, chipping in 12 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Bobcats were led by Stephanie Haynes who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.  Stephanie Hunter added 10 points and five rebounds for the ‘Cats.
 
The Bobcats fall to 2-9 while the Wolfpack improve their record to 7-5.
 
The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday against the UBC Okanagan Heat at 5:00 p.m. Thompson Rivers faces the Fraser Valley Cascades in Kamloops on January 17th.

REGINA – The #5-ranked Regina Cougars pulled away from visiting UBC Okanagan with a big run late in the first quarter and rolled to an 88-56 win over the Heat on Friday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
The win improves the U of R's conference record to 10-2.
 
Nicole Clarke hit four of her eight attempts from three-point range and was 9-for-18 from the field overall as the fifth-year guard led all players with 23 points. Alyssia Kajati added 16 points, while Janine Guijt scored 15 and Charlotte Kot matched her career high with 14 points and set a new career best with 14 rebounds as she recorded a big double-double.
 
Making its first visit to Regina in program history, UBC Okanagan (2-9) was led by Emily Kanester's 17 points. Shenelle Tamminen came off the bench to fall just short of a double-double for the Heat, ending up with 11 points and nine rebounds.
 
UBC Okanagan will make the short trip east for a Saturday night game at Brandon, while the Cougars will return to the court next Friday and Saturday with a pair of home games against Prairie Division rival Winnipeg.

REGINA – The CIS #5 Regina Cougars team showed no signs of rust in its first game of the second half of the schedule, defeating Thompson Rivers by a 99-39 margin on Thursday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
The story of the night was pure domination on the glass by the Cougars, as they outrebounded TRU 73-31 in the victory.
 
Regina was led by newcomer Janine Guijt's game-high 16 points in her first game with the U of R. Nicole Clarke had 15 and Megan Chamberlin 13 to go with 11 rebounds.
 
Ryan Kennedy scored a team-high nine points for Thompson Rivers.

The WolfPack drop to 6-5 on the season but remain 1½ games up on UNBC for the fourth and final Pacific Division playoff berth. They'll continue the road swing with a game at Brandon (2-8) on Friday night.
 
Now 9-2 on the season and – for the time being – in sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings, the Cougars will be back in action on Friday night against UBC Okanagan (2-8). Game time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - Ashley Hirons led the Dinos to their ninth straight win of the season. Hirons netted 16 in the Dinos 77-52 win over the Timberwolves on Thursday night at the Northern Sport Centre.

Early pressure gave the University of Calgary Dinos a 10-0 run, keeping the Timberwolves scoreless in the first four minutes. Ashley Hirons (Melbourne, AUS) shot a flawless 4-4 from the field in the first quarter and finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Jessica Thielen (Jaffray, BC) added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Timberwolves struggled to find their footing throughout the game but were led by captain Mercedes VanKoughnett (Prince George, BC). VanKoughnett led the game with 22 points and four rebounds.

The Dinos, now 9-2, will return to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday, January 11. The UNBC Timberwolves, now 4-7, take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night. Both games are can be viewed live at http://canadawest.tv.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars fell 66-48 to the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Thursday at Kenyon Court.

Mariah Miller and Kim Veldman led the Pronghorns in scoring with 20 and 19 points respectively. Alicia Tan put in a team-high 13 for the Cougars. 

Mount Royal now holds a record of 1-10, while Lethbridge improves to 4-7 on the season. Lethbridge will head west to Prince George to play UNBC on Saturday night.

The Cougars will hold home court on Saturday when they will welcome the Calgary Dinos into their gym for the Seventh Annual CBCF Shoot for the Cure Game. Tip-off is at 5:00 p.m. at Kenyon Court.
