MVB: Bobcats battle back for impressive win over Winnipeg

BRANDON – While it looked like the Winnipeg Wesmen had picked up where they left off from Tuesday, the Bobcats flipped the script and picked up a huge win in the process.

The Bobcats battled back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 (15-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-9) in the exact same fashion as Tuesday, a match in which the Wesmen battled back to win 3-2 after trailing early.

Fifth-year outside David Bommersbach started the first set on fire for the Wesmen and continued that trend for most of the night, pacing the Wesmen with 20 kills, but Brandon's balanced defensive presence proved to be the difference.

Brandon struggled to find an answer early but made some line-up changes to start the third set that provided a spark.

Coach Grant Wilson went with a small line-up in the third, moving starting libero Brady Nault to the outside and bringing in fourth-year Joel Makara to play libero.

The line-up worked well in the third and fourth sets, creating an electric fifth and final set, in which the Bobcats serve and block game took over and sealed the deal.

"I didn't think we'd have another one that dramatic since Tuesday but it happened again so nothing to complain about right now," says outside hitter Seth Friesen. "I think it was just belief that we would come back. We didn't doubt for a second."

Friesen led the attack for Brandon finishing with 16 kills. Elliott Viles had 14 kills, while Nault had seven kills after starting at libero.

The Bobcats managed 35 total blocks, led by James Weir's seven while Mason Metcalf had six.

Bommersbach put up a double-double for the Wesmen (20 kills, 13 digs) while Ethan Duncan had 11 kills and Mikael Clegg had 50 assists.

The win improves Brandon's record to 9-3 while the Wesmen enter the break at 10-2 in conference play.

The two teams will enjoy the December break before taking part in the Wesmen Classic at the U of W over the holidays.
