MVB: Bears sweep Bisons for fifth win

EDMONTON - Reigning Canada West First Star of the Week Taryq Sani was stellar once again for the Alberta Golden Bears, as he ripped in another 17 kills, as the Bears defeated the Manitoba Bisons 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-19), Friday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

Sani's 17 kills are on top of the 47 he recorded across two games in Regina, and were easily a game-high against Manitoba. Adam DeJonckheere led the Bisons with eight, while Alex McMullin (eight kills), and Jackson Kennedy (seven kills), also turned in strong performances for Alberta.

The win was the Bears fifth in Canada West play, as they remain undefeated and improve to 5-0-0. The Bisons, meanwhile, suffer their fourth-straight loss, and now sport a 1-4 conference record.

That being said, the visitors put up a good fight in the first set against Alberta, eventually losing by just six points. The set was incredibly tight throughout, with Alberta gaining the edge late with a 5-1 run.

The second set started much the same, with the Bears holding a slim 9-7 advantage. However, Sani and McMullin took over the set for the hosts, who cruised to a comfortable 25-14 set win.

The third set was a mirror copy of the first, as the Bisons looked great to start, but just couldn't keep pace with Alberta in the latter stages. Alberta took the third 25-19, and the match 3-0.

The Bears and Bisons will finish their weekend series tomorrow night, with a 5:00 p.m. start time set at Saville.
