MSOC: Spartans tally four, bury Cascades in local rivalry match

By Mark Janzen, Trinity Western University

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western scored two goals in the first half and duplicated its offensive performance in the second half en route to a convincing 4-0 win over local rival Fraser Valley Friday at Chase Office Field.

Joel Waterman (Aldergrove, B.C.) launched the Spartans offensive surge in the 11th minute, volleying home a cross for his fourth goal in five games. From there, TWU (6-3-4) continued to push forward, with Leighton Johnson (Strathmore, Alta.) scoring his fifth of the season in the 33rd minute, before Aidan Moore (Langley) and Vito Poletto (Calgary) rounded out the scoring with goals in the 55th and 87th minutes, respectively.

TWU goalie Sebastian Colyn (Langley) made one save to nab his fifth shutout of the season, as the Spartans held UFV (3-6-2) to just three total shots.

The Cascades David Hicks stopped five of the nine shots on goal he faced.

Waterman, who was playing in his first home of the game of the season gave the Spartan Faithful something to cheer about early as he took a Johnson cross and cracked it into the back of the net.

Johnson, who had gone eight games without a goal, then doubled TWU's lead, slotting a low ball to the bottom right corner.

Ten minutes into the second half, Moore buried his second of the year, heading home a Domenic Poletto (Calgary) cross.

Poletto put the finishing touches on the win, scoring in the 87th minute after taking a quick pass from Caleb Johnson (Strathmore) and whipping the ball into the low left corner from 10 yards out.

QUOATABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"It was a great result. It was a 90-minute performance and I'm happy with the way everyone played. We did everything that we asked the guys to do, in terms of moving the ball and getting switches in, getting overlaps in, getting chances, finishing our chances and just trying to dominate the game by possession.

"We still have to clean up a few things and it's going to be a battle on Sunday. (UFV) is a team that fights hard and they're going to come out with everything again. We can't just assume that we can step on the field and the same thing will happen. In Canada West, it never works that way. I'm proud of the boys tonight, but once tomorrow hits, we're on to the next one."

NOTABLE
• TWU outshot UFV 16-3 and had a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.

• TWU is now 3-1-3 at Chase Office Field this year.
