MSOC: Griffins Clip Pronghorns in home finale

Lethbridge – With one goal in the first half and two in the second half, the MacEwan Griffins spoiled the Lethbridge Pronghorns' final home game of the season with a 3-1 win.

Christian Hernandez scored in the opening half and Brian Mayall and Zibusiso Moyo each scored in the second half. Stephen Primeau replied late for the Pronghorns.

The loss drops the Pronghorns to 2-8-2 on the season and with only two games remaining in their season, the likelihood of a second consecutive playoff appearance was diminished greatly with the loss. With the win, the Griffins snap a seven game winless streak and improve to 2-7-1.

Statistically, the opening 45 minutes was even across the board in all but one stat, the most important one, the scoreboard. The Griffins carried a 1-0 lead into the break after Christian Hernandez's second goal of the season in the 24th minute. Hernandez sent a rocket from 25-yards out and went off the crossbar and in.

Each team had six shot attempts, with three on goal and both had two corners in the opening 45 minutes.

Ellis Davies had the best chance for the Pronghorns in the first half, forcing Dory Elliott to dive to his left and just getting a piece of the ball, deflecting it to touch.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Dominique Point du Jour nearly tied the game for the Pronghorns. From a free kick just outside the penalty area, Point du Jour curled the ball around the Griffins wall but found the crossbar.

Just shy of the 70th minute mark, the Griffins picked up an insurance marker. Lahai Mansaray's first attempt went off the post but right to the foot of Brian Mayall for a tap-in.  It was Mayall's first goal of the season.

With 15 minutes remaining, Stephen Primeau had a good look to bring the Pronghorns back within one but his header off a corner kick just sailed over the bar.

While the Pronghorns continued to pressure to get on the board, it was the Griffins that would seal the win off a broken play. With the Griffins attacking with numbers, Zibusiso Moyo attempted a pass into the middle of the box but was blocked by a Pronghorn defender. However, the ball went right back to Moyo, who poked the ball through a crowd and off the post and in.

The Pronghorns spoiled a Griffins shutout in the 87th minute. Playing in his final home game as a Pronghorn, Point du Jour made a great run deep into the Griffins end and cut the ball back to a wide-open Stephen Primeau. Primeau put away his third of the season, cutting the Griffins lead to 3-1, but that would be as close as the Horns would get.

The Pronghorns finished the day with a slight edge in shot attempts at 16-15, and with six corners in the second half, an 8-2 advantage in that category, however the Pronghorns could not capitalize on their opportunities.

Both the Pronghorns and Griffins will have a bye next week. The Pronghorns will return to action the following weekend, traveling to Calgary to face the Mount Royal Cougars and Calgary Dinos. The Griffins will also return to action October 14th and 15th, playing in a home-and-home series with their crosstown rivals, the Alberta Golden Bears.
