MSOC: Spartans score five in win over Lethbridge

LANGLEY, B.C. – The Trinity Western men's soccer team earned a 5-1 win over Lethbridge on the strength of five different goal-scorers, as the Spartans cruised to their third win of the season Friday at Chase Office Field.

TWU's Domenic Poletto (Calgary) scored his first goal of the season in the eighth minute of the match and Jacob Low (Port Moody, B.C.) doubled the Spartans lead in the 20th minute with his third of the year to put the Spartans in control early on.

A Pronghorns goal off the foot of Stephen Primeau briefly put the game back in the balance in the 26th minute, but an Aidan Moore (Langley) marker reestablished the Spartans lead six minutes later. Second-half goals from TWU's Matthew Roxburgh (Langley) and Elie Gindo (Langley) capped the night that was heavily in the Spartans favour.

Following three straight ties, the Spartans (3-1-3) have now won back-to-back games and are unbeaten in five outings. The Pronghorns (1-4-2) are winless in their last three games, including two losses and a tie.

Poletto got the offence rolling for TWU when he sniped a ball off the Pronghorns and did the rest of the work himself, cutting in off the left side and slotting his shot to the bottom right corner.

Low put TWU up by a pair when he slammed a rebound home from six yards out.

Primeau cut into the Spartans lead when he blocked a TWU clearing attempt just a few yards out from the Spartans goal and the bouncing ball ricocheted off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Moore put TWU back up by two in the 32nd minute, taking a pass from Poletto and slicing in off the left wing before chipping a ball past Lethbridge netminder Matthew Vandervoort, for his first goal of the season.

In the 64th minute, Roxburgh put TWU up 4-1 when he took a nifty pass from Poletto and buried his shot into the top right corner.

Gindo tallied at the death to round out the scoring.

First-year TWU goalkeeper Sebastian Colyn (Langley) earned his third win of the season.

QUOATABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
On the Match
"It was a good game. We did the things we wanted to do tonight. We took our chances and the result speaks for itself. We would have liked the clean sheet, but it's a learning experience for us to clear the ball and make sure we don't allow them opportunities."

On TWU's Offensive Production
"I think a lot of it is confidence and composure in the box. We had a lot more composure tonight and we didn't feel rushed or pressured in the box and we were able to slot a bunch home."

On Rolling Out His Bench
"It was great because a lot of guys got in. A lot of guys want to contribute and they've been contributing in training and trying to make the first group better, so it was great to reward them with some time. Braden Barwich (Calgary) got on the field and Roxy got a goal, which was fantastic, and Pedro (Paz Duarte, Brasilia) made his debut and almost scored a couple of goals."

NOTABLE
• The match was the first contest between these two teams in more than five years. The last time they played was Sept. 7, 2012, when TWU won 2-0.
• The win is the Spartans second 5-1 victory of the year, having opened the season with a 5-1 win over Victoria.
• Poletto, who didn't have a point heading into Friday's game, put up three points, with a goal and two assists.
