SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team were in charge of the game from beginning to end en route to posting a 5-1 victory over the visiting Regina Cougars inside Merlis Belsher Place on Jan. 12.
 
Carter Folk, Parker Thomas, Layne Young, Logan McVeigh and Shane Collins all scored for the hometown Huskies. For both Collins and Young it was the first goal of their Canada West careers.
 
"We talk about our depth a lot, and Layne Young has been coming on for the last month and a half. We finally got an opportunity to play him and he got rewarded," said Huskies head coach Dave Adolph. "We'll take away the positives. I'm really glad he was able to score because he's a really good young player."
 
Tyler Kreklewich had the lone tally for Regina with Zak Zborosky and Connor Odelein registering assists.
 
Taran Kozun made 25 saves for his 13th win of the year and Dawson MacAuley kept Regina in the contest with 39 saves.
 
In total a feisty affair ended with the Huskies outshooting the Cougars 39-26 and the two teams combined for 96 penalty minutes.
 
Saskatchewan put their stamp on the game just over two minutes into the contest when Donovan Neuls fed a cross-ice pass to an incoming Folk who made no mistake in firing the puck past MacAuley.
 
That would be the only tally of the first period as MacAuley shut the door on multiple occasions to keep the score 1-0 despite the Huskies outshooting the Cougars 16-5 in the frame.
 
Parker Thomas increased the lead early in the second after some nice moves in-tight. The Huskies broke in on a three-on-one and Thomas chose to keep the puck and was able to outwait a sprawling MacAuley to tuck the puck in near-post.
 
Regina registered their first shot of the period 13 minutes into the second frame when a chance off the stick of Tanner Campbell was swallowed up by Kozun.
 
That shot swung the momentum of the period however and Regina ended the second frame playing their best hockey of the night. They would fire 11 more shots on net in the final seven minutes of the second, but Kozun was equal to the task.
 
Any chance of a comeback was snuffed out immediately after the start of the third period when Levi Cable played a beautiful pass into the path of Young who buried the opportunity just over a minute into the frame.
 
Saskatchewan would put the game out of reach just a minute later when McVeigh pounced on a loose puck after a Jesse Forsberg blast to make the score 4-0.
 
Collins and Kreklewich traded goals late in the third to make the final score 5-1 in favour of the Huskies.
 
With the win Saskatchewan moves to 17-3-0 on the season and holds onto their conference lead while Regina falls to 3-16-1.
 
Next up for the Huskies is a trip to Alberta where they will play the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Jan. 18 & 19. The Cougars will begin a four-game homestand next weekend when they welcome Manitoba to Regina on those same dates.
