MHKY: MRU hangs 12 goals on Cougars in blowout win

REGINA - Mount Royal University erupted for double-digits goals in a 12-2 dismantling of the University of Regina men's hockey team on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.

The visitors scored four goals in the first period, five in the second and three more in the third, outshooting the Cougars 41-23 for the contest.

Ryley Lindgren led the charge with two goals and three assists, while Connor Rankin chipped in with two goals and two helpers. Hunter Zandee, David Stephens Josh Bly, Colton Kroeker, Austin Adamson, Connor Chartier, Jamal Watson and Kade Jensen also netted goals. Brennan Riddle and Zach McPhee scored for Regina, as the Cougars drop to 2-12-1 on the season.

Riley Morris got the win in net, making 21 saves. Dawson MacAuley made the start for Regina, making 13 saves on 19 shots. Brandon Holtby came on in relief, stopping 16 out of 22 shots in just over 35 minutes of work.

Rankin opened the scoring with his third of the season just 13 seconds in. Bly added to the lead at the 1:36 mark before Riddle got the Cougars going with a wrist shot over the shoulder of Morris five minutes later. Stephens and Watson chipped in with goals before the end of the first period, and Kroeker and Adamson scored to chase MacAuley out of the crease early in the second.

McPhee got one back for Regina at the 7:21 mark to cut the lead to 6-2, but Jensen, Zandee and Lindgren piled on more goals before the end of the middle frame.

Lindgren scored another early in the third, Chartier notched his sixth of the year midway through, and Rankin put the finishing touches on the night with less than five minutes to play.

MRU improves to 7-5-3 with its third consecutive win. 

The Cougars and MRU will square off again on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop slated for 3 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
