REGINA - A high-scoring affair at The Co-operators Centre saw the No. 5-ranked Calgary Dinos hang on for a 6-4 win over the University of Regina men's hockey team on Saturday afternoon.
The Dinos earn the weekend sweep with the result and improve to 9-2-1 on the Canada West season. The Cougars drop to 2-9-1, and their losing streak expands to six games.
Riley Sheen was the star for the Dinos offensively, piling up three goals. Chris Rauckman, Cain Franson and Dylan Buesnius also found the net for the visitors. Tyler Kreklewich, Corey Kosloski, Connor Odelein and Isaac Schacher replied with goals for the Cougars.
Jordan Papirny earned his second win of the weekend, stopping 21 Cougar efforts. Dawson MacAuley made 23 saves between the pipes for Regina.
The Dinos opened the scoring early once again, with Sheen wiring a wrist shot past MacAuley's glove just 61 seconds into Saturday's contest. Calgary picked up a shorthanded goal shortly after, with Rauckman snapping a low shot between the pads of the Cougar netminder.
The Cougars got on the board early in the second period thanks to a trio of rookies, as Kreklewich picked up his first goal in the green and gold. After Papirny made the initial stop, Kreklewich stuck with the play and the puck found its way into the back of the net. Keith Anderson and Zak Hicks collected assists on the goal.
Franson scored Calgary's second shorthanded goal of the afternoon with a wrist shot to the blocker side of MacAuley and Sheen scored his second just over a minute later on a two-on-one break.
The Cougars would get one back before the end of the second period, as Kosloski ripped one of the crossbar and in with assists coming from Landon Peel and Gray Marr.
Calgary stretched the lead to 5-2 early in the second thanks to their captain, Busenius. The defender joined a rush and took a feed in the slot, potting a wrister glove side. Regina answered a few minutes later, as Kreklewich fed Odelein who notched his first goal as a Cougar with a low shot.
With time ticking down, Regina would make it a one-goal game, as Schacher scored his first of the year with a high shot. The Dinos would remove any doubt seconds later, as Sheen completed the hat trick with a late empty-netter.
The Dinos will be on the road next weekend with a tough test against the No. 3-ranked Alberta Golden Bears. Regina will also be on the road for a matchup with the UBC Thunderbirds.
