REGINA - A balanced attack led the No. 5-ranked Calgary Dinos past the University of Regina men's hockey team on Friday night, with a 7-1 final at The Co-operators Centre.
Six different scorers found the net for Calgary, as Matt Alfaro scored twice and Regan Nagy, Dane Gibson, Logan Fisher, Cain Franson and Riley Sheen also had goals. Tanner Campbell replied for the Cougars, who drop to 2-8-1.
Jordan Papirny earned his fifth win of the season, stopping 13 shots as the Dinos improve to 8-2-1. Dawson MacAuley made 30 saves at the opposite of the rink.
The Dinos jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first period. Nagy's third of the season came just 2:51 into the game, as he squeezed a shot under the glove-side arm of MacAuley after taking a feed from Coda Gordon.
Gibson added to the lead at the 10:48 mark and Fisher scored less than two minutes after that. Gibson beat MacAuley with a backhand after collecting a rebound and Fisher ripped a shot from the slot after receiving a pass from Ryan Graham, who was stationed behind the Cougar net.
Alfaro capitalized on the powerplay in the middle of the second frame off a great pass from Dylan Busenius. The Dinos powerplay set up in the Cougar end and the Dino captain rifled a pass from the right of MacAuley right onto the tape of Alfaro who one-timed it off the post and in to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Campbell got the Cougars on the board late in the second period, putting home a rebound from a sharp angle after a Brennan Riddle shot from the slot was blocked by a sprawling defender. The deflection left Papirny screened and out of position and Campbell made no mistake for his first goal as a Cougar.
Calgary wasted no time restoring the big lead, as Franson beat MacAuley with a rocket to the short side exactly 60 seconds later. Tim Vanstone picked up an assist on Franson's fourth of the Canada West campaign.
Sheen's goal came on the powerplay late in the third period, as he took a backdoor feed and tapped a quick shot into the Cougar net. Alfaro put the finishing touches on the game with less than a minute left, taking a drop pass and putting a shot off the post and in.
The two teams will go at it again on Saturday, with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
