CALGARY – Thanks to five different goal scorers, the University of Calgary Dinos ended the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds four-game win streak with a 5-2 win on Friday morning at the Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos snapped a three game losing streak of their own with the decision.

"We knew it was an important game after getting swept last weekend," said Dinos forward Mitch Cook.

"Getting back in the win column is really huge for us."

An early penalty failed to phase the Dinos, as they promptly opened the scoring at 5:57 mark. After Logan Fisher and Bradley Schoonbaert began a scramble in front of the net, Cook potted a rebound, elevating the puck over Thunderbirds goalie Rylan Toth.

Under 10 minutes later, Dinos forward Dane Gibson capitalized on a gift from Thunderbirds defender Josh Connolly, wristing a shot pas the blocker side of Toth.

26 seconds later, Riley Sheen tripled the Dinos' lead, scoring his fifth goal in five games, beating Toth neatly on the wraparound.

"He's our leader offensively for sure," added Cook. "He's so dynamic with the puck, and always seems to be around the net."

In the second period, the Thunderbirds needed over 15 minutes to register their first shot of the period, despite two power plays during that time.

Late in the period, Dinos defender Jake Kearley took a roughing penalty, and UBC finally got on the board.

With under five seconds to go, fifth-year forward Michael Stenerson chipped the puck up off a faceoff and put it over the left shoulder of Dinos netminder Jordan Papirny, cutting the deficit to two.

After 40, the Dinos outshout the Thunderbirds 24-10.

Heading into the third, the Dinos broke the game wide open. Schoonbaert restored the DInos lead with a snazzy spinning shot to the top corner past Toth. The goal was his first in university hockey.

Just over a minute later, Chris Rauckman shorthanded, exploded out of his zone and beat Toth through the five-hole to give the Dinos their biggest lead of the afternoon.

Quentin Greenwood cut the deficit to three halfway through the period, but it was all for not, as the Dinos cruised to a 5-2 win, ending their losing skid.

These teams will rematch again tomorrow afternoon, for a matinee affair.
