ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – The University of the Fraser Valley men's basketball team continued to roll, defeating the Brandon Bobcats 83-73 on Saturday evening at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre to extend its win streak to nine games.

The Cascades' recipe for success was much the same as in Friday's 74-66 triumph – strong defence throughout (Brandon shot just 33.3 per cent from the field) and an offensive outburst in the third quarter to pull away.

Parm Bains poured in a game-high 20 points, Sukhjot Bains (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Daniel Adediran (11 points, 10 boards) both posted double-doubles, and Andrew Morris chipped in with 13 points as UFV improved to 10-4 in Canada West play, tied for third in the conference.

Pookie Saunders paced the Bobcats (2-10) with 17 points, and Troy Grant (15), Tyvon Cooper (14) and Steven Chieng (10) also scored in double figures.

"It starts with the leadership of the team and the character that they have, and the entire group has," Cascades head coach Adam Friesen said afterward, reflecting on what his team has done well throughout its nine-game streak. "And our biggest thing is doing the simple things as well as we can – rebounding, turnovers, defence – and really making a commitment to excel in those three areas."

The Bobcats led 17-16 at the end of a back-and-forth first quarter, but the Cascades began to find traction midway through the second quarter. They ended the frame on an 8-0 run, with Parm Bains accounting for half of those points, to take a 37-28 edge into the break.

In the third quarter, Saunders threw down a dunk to get Brandon back to within 43-38, but the Cascades responded with a 10-0 run to seize control of the proceedings. They expanded the margin to 20 points (66-46) in the fourth after Adediran followed a Sukhjot Bains triple with a layup on the very next possession. While the visitors were able to trim the deficit to 10 on Grant's triple with just over a minute remaining, it was too little, too late.

"Our third quarter really won us the game," said Friesen, whose team owned a 57-45 edge in the rebounding department. "The guys came out of halftime with a lot of energy, and I thought our work on the glass again was terrific."

The Cascades basketball teams are on action on the road next weekend, visiting the Victoria Vikes, while the Bobcats return home to host the Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas.
