CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos completed the sweep of the University of Victoria Vikes on Sunday afternoon with an 86-74 win.

Calgary improves to a perfect 8-0 on the season with four games to play before the December break, while Victoria falls to 2-6.

Despite a tight start to the first quarter, the Dinos led the Vikes 2214 at the end of the opening frame. The Vikes cut into the Dinos' lead in the second quarter to put themselves in a good position in the second half. The Dinos led 36-34 at halftime.

The Dinos and Vikes went shot-for-shot in the third quarter but the Dinos gave themselves some breathing room to lead 66–56 going into the fourth quarter. The Vikes didn't go away quietly in the fourth quarter as they hit some key baskets to come within six points of the Dinos lead.

Ultimately the Calgary defence made some key stops and were able to pull away from the Vikes to secure the win.

"We didn't hit many shots all game and they shot the ball pretty well and that does make life tough on you on offence but Lars hit a couple threes and Lucas hits one, all of a sudden you're in a better space," said Dinos Head Coach Dan Vanhooren.

Brett Layton led the Dinos with 21 points, six rebounds, and four blocks on 9-of-11 shooting. Mambi Diawara and Lars Schlueter each had 16 points and David Kapinga had 13 points.

As a team the Dinos shot well from the field finishing the game shooting 50 per cent, despite struggling from outside, while the Vikes responded after a Saturday night loss nailing 13 three pointers to keep themselves in the game.

"Defensively our rotations were poor and we gave up some open shots and I think that set us up for them to have some confidence shooting the ball," said Vanhooren.

Mason Loewen had 16 points and six assists and Scott Kellum finished with 15 points for Victoria. Right behind them was Jordan Charles who had 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

"We don't really have a lot of room for error and they had a couple guys who stood up and made some plays offensively," said Vikes Head Coach Craig Beaucamp. "Every possession is pretty important but bottom line is when we needed to get some key stops we didn't get them."

The Dinos are in Winnipeg next weekend to take on the University of Manitoba Bisons, while Victoria returns home to face the Trinity Western Spartans in a two-game set next week.
