SASKATOON – The University of Regina Cougars extinguished the University of Saskatchewan Huskies eight-game win streak to finish the 2017-18 Canada West season with an 81-76 win Saturday night on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAC.
After the weekend split, Saskatchewan finishes 10-10, while Regina finishes 11-9. Both teams will host a Canada West Play-In next weekend.
The top 12 teams in the standings make playoffs, but are reseeded based on RPI. The top four receive byes into the quarter-finals, with the rest of the playoff group playing in a single elimination play-in game.
Regina will host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, while the Huskies host the Victoria Vikes.
A 10-point Cougar lead in the third shrunk to just one heading into the fourth thanks to a solo 7-0 run by fifth-year Alex Unruh. The Huskies would knock down a few shots to start the final quarter to earn their first lead of the second half.
However, it was a 9-2 run by the Cougars that featured back-to-back makes from fifth-year Brandon Tull to give Regina a lift heading into the final minutes. The Huskies would narrow the lead to four with 22 second remaining, but Regina sealed the win on the free-throw line.
Tull had a team-high 20 points for the Cougars, with six rebounds and an assist. Brian Ofori recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Third-year Lawrence Moore had a season-high 43 points with three rebounds and three steals. Unruh finished with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Saskatchewan shot 40.9%, while Regina shot 42.6%. The Cougars also won the battle on the boards out rebounding the Huskies 42-27.
Regina's Canada West Play-In is Thursday, while the Huskies will play Friday at 7 p.m. at the PAC. Tickets will be on sale Tuesday.
