MBB: Fourth quarter surge powers BU to victory

BRANDON – The Bobcats got back in the win column on Saturday night after bouncing the UNBC Timberwolves 89-76 in Canada West men's basketball action.

BU came out strong grabbing an early 9-2 lead in the first quarter. The Timberwolves trailed 25-17, but tied it following an 8-0 run. At the end of the first, the Bobcats were up 29-28.

The second quarter was an exchange of baskets back and forth and at halftime it was 45-44 Brandon.

Brandon and UNBC were tied 55-55 late in the third quarter, before the Bobcats outscored the Timberwolves 10-5 over the final two and half minutes to go into the fourth leading 65-60.

In the final frame, the Bobcats built their lead to 10 points and beyond with a late 12-3 surge to snap their three-game losing streak in the process.

BU had a balanced attack with four players reaching double figures. Jonathan Range recorded 22 points as the Bobcats improved to 7-and-7. Tyvon Cooper and Troy Grant got 18 points apiece, while Pookie Saunders added 11 points.

UNBC's top scorer was Volodymyr Pluzhniko, who put up 16 points. The Timberwolves saw their three-game winning streak come to an end and slipped to 7-and-9 on the season.

Both the Bobcats and Timberwolves are on the road this coming weekend. BU battles the Regina Cougars while UNBC visits the Victoria Vikes.
