- Saskatchewan’s Matthew Forbes powered 30 points en route to an 89-65 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night at the PAC.

The second-year forward, who scored a career-high 40 points on Friday against Winnipeg, went 13-for-20 from the field and 3-for-five from the free-throw line in Saturday's win.  He also added 10 rebounds.

With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 13-5 on the season, while Winnipeg drops to 11-8. The win helps the Huskies inch closer to a securing a top two spot and hosting duties in the first round of the playoffs.

Jordan Clennon was the best on the night for the Wesmen tallying a team-high 17 points. Benny Iko added another 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Patrick tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies.

The Huskies hit the road to face the Manitoba Bisons next weekend, while the Wesmen return home to host the Alberta Golden Bears.

EDMONTON - For the first time since December of 2010, a streak of 26 Canada West regular season games including 19 straight at the Saville Community Sports Centre, the #6 Alberta Golden Bears suffered a loss on home court as they dropped an 85-75 decision to the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday.

Alberta was led offensively by Ken Otieno, who had 25 points, and Todd Bergen-Henengouwen, who picked up a double-double in the loss banking 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Manitoba was paced by 25 points from Jonar Huertas, while Turkish import Yigit Ozsayiner added 22 points.

The loss drops Alberta to 14-4 on the season, while Manitoba improves to 13-6. Both teams remain in the hunt for first place in the Prairie Division, as does the 13-5 Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Golden Bears will finish out their season on the road as they travel to 11-8 Winnipeg next weekend and then wrap up the regular season campaign in Saskatoon against the Huskies. Manitoba hosts Saskatchewan next weekend and then will end in Winnipeg against the Wesmen.

Cougars-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – With the usual suspects leading the way, the Calgary Dinos improved to 11-7 on the season with an 82-74 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Led by the one-two punch of Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson and Thijin Moses, who combined for 51 points and 18 rebounds, the Dinos won their sixth consecutive game to move into fourth place in the Prairie Division and playoff position with four games remaining.

Paul Gareau put up 31 points and hauled down 10 rebounds for Regina, while Connor Burns poured in 21 and corralled an even dozen off the glass.

Regina drops to 6-12.

The Cougars could do the Dinos a favour next weekend when they host Lethbridge for a two-game series in Regina. Calgary heads to Brandon next weekend before closing out the regular season Feb. 14-15 in a home-and-home series against Lethbridge, beginning Valentine’s Day in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Timberwolves-Vikes Stats

VICTORIA - The Victoria Vikes had to play gritty basketball from start to finish 72-61 over the UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday.

The weekend sweep improves the Vikes record to 12-5, while the Timberwolves drop to 5-12 in the Canada West.
 
The Vikes were led in scoring by Terrell Evans, whose late surge tallied him a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Evans also added four steals and three assists, while Michael Acheampong and Chris McLaughlin both added 14 points and eight rebounds.
 
For the Timberwolves, Sam Raphael sunk three treys to finish with 19 points, as well as nine boards. Jose Araujo came off the bench to also hit three long-range shots and finish with 12 points, while Francis Rowe finished with 11 points.

Next weekend, Feb. 8-9, the Vikes will travel for a double header against Mount Royal, while UNBC will host the UBC Thunderbirds (16-2). The games will be broadcast live at http://canadawest.tv.

Cougars-Thunderbirds Stats

VANCOUVER – On a night dedicated to their fifth-year seniors, the #2 UBC Thunderbirds got big contributions from all over the roster en route to a 95-68 win over the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday night at War Memorial Gym.

Five players scored in double-digits, including fifth-year Doug Plumb, who got to the line regularly all series long and put up 13 points on Saturday. UBC’s other fifth-year player, guard O’Brian Wallace, had a well-rounded game with nine points, five rebounds and two steals.

Nick Loewen led the Cougars with 11 points. Jalen Gardener had nine points and seven rebounds. Mount Royal falls to 3-15 on the year and will host Victoria next weekend.

The ‘Birds improve to 16-2, maintaining their three-game lead over Victoria in the Pacific Division. That means UBC can lock up the division next week with two wins at UNBC.

UBC Okanagan 68 #9 Fraser Valley 58

KELOWNA, BC – Great team play on offence and defence fueled the UBC Okanagan Heat to finally knock off a ranked opponent with their 68-58 victory over the visiting Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday night.

Fourth-year guard Landry Ndayitwayeko came up huge off the bench for the Heat, finding nothing but net on all four of his three-point attempt en route to piling up 16 points and 5 rebounds. Mitch Goodwin was just one rebound shy of a double-double, with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds in the effort.

Fifth-year guard Sam Freeman led the Cascades and the game in scoring with 20 points, and second-year Kevon Parchment was his only other teammate to see double digit scoring, finishing with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

UFV falls to 10-8 as the Heat snap their three game win streak. They will return home to Envision Athletics Centre to host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack next weekend. Meanwhile, the Heat finally secure win number three (3-16) and will hit the road for the last night next weekend to visit the Trinity Western Spartans. Tip-off Friday night is at 8 p.m.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Though they found themselves in a third quarter deficit of 17 points, the Lethbridge Pronghorns fought back to a 82-75 win over the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday at the 1st Choice Savings Centre to complete the weekend sweep and bring their winning percentage back to .500 with a 9-9 record on the season.

Julian Spear Chief-Morris came up with a massive second half to lead the ‘Horns with 20 points and eight rebounds. Derek Waldner had an 18-point, 20 board double-double. For Brandon, it was Jordan Reaves with 31 points, 11 boards.

This loss drops the Bobcats to 4-14 on the season and they will return home next weekend to meet the Calgary Dinos.  The ‘Horns will travel to face the 6-12 Regina Cougars.  Both games will be webcast LIVE on canadawest.tv. #cwTV
