FB: First quarter explosion gives Calgary win over Alberta

RED DEER, Alta - Quarterbacks Adam Sinagra and Josiah Joseph combined to throw for 338 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, leading the Calgary Dinos to a 50-38 non-conference win over the Alberta Golden Bears at Great Chief Park in Red Deer.

Sinagra completed all three of his passes for 138 yards and two scores, before being replaced by Joseph, who tossed for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 8/8 passing. The passing display gave Calgary a 33-7 lead after the first quarter, and a 40-17 lead at the half.

Hunter Karl was the main target early on the for the Dinos, as he hauled in TD passes of 85 and 43 yards in the first quarter. Tyson Philpot was also key to the Dinos early success, as he finished with three catches for 119 yards.

Bears starter Brad Baker completed four of his seven passes in a little over a quarter of work, finishing with 80 yards and a touchdown. First-year Bear Brad Launhardt led Alberta with 207 yards passing and two touchdowns in his first taste of Canada West action.

Along with the two Karl scores, the Dinos added another three touchdowns and a Niko DiFonte field goal to take the commanding 40-17 halftime lead.

With most of the second-string players in to start the second half, the Bears chipped into the Dinos lead. Launhardt added his second TD pass of the game early in the third, while Bears QBs Declan O'Flaherty and Jonathan Ericson also tossed for major scores.

The Dinos will begin their Hardy Cup defence on Friday, as they visit the Regina Rams at Mosaic Field. The Golden Bears will also begin their conference season on Friday, as they travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Rams.
