PREVIEW

TORONTO
– Three members of the University of Regina Rams are among the 53 players participating in the CFL Combine in Toronto this weekend, including defensive lineman Stefan Charles and offensive linemen Brett Jones and Chris Mercer.

Overview by TSN's Duane Forde

Players will be interviewed by CFL teams on Friday before being put through a rigorous set of drills on Saturday and Sunday. The drills include bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, 40-yard dash, short shuttle, and three-cone drill. The participants will also undergo measurements for hand size, arm length, height, and weight.

Charles (6-5, 310) holds the highest CFL Scouting Bureau ranking of the three Rams, as he was slotted at No. 4 in the department’s final list released back in December. The lineman played three seasons at the U of R, collecting a total of 50½ tackles and finishing fourth in school history with 9½ sacks. Charles, who missed much of the 2012 season with an injury, was named a first-team All-Canadian after a stellar 2011 campaign.

2013 Draft Rankings

Jones (6-2, 310) stepped in as a starter for the Rams in his first season of CIS eligibility and hasn’t looked back. The versatile offensive lineman, who has essentially split his four seasons at the U of R between left guard and centre, has been named a first-team All-Canadian two times in his career, is a two-time recipient of Canada West’s outstanding student-athlete award, and was named the conference’s top lineman in 2012.

Mercer (6-7, 290) played four seasons with the Rams, earning a spot as the team’s starting left tackle in his first year on campus and never missing a game. The big lineman made 32 straight starts in conference games for the U of R and also started in five playoff games for the Rams. He capped his CIS career by being named a second-team All-Canadian last fall.

The 2013 CFL Canadian Draft will take place on Monday, May 6.
