Four fourth quarter TDs help Huskies past Western

SASKATOON - Returning from a three-year absence from game experience at pivot, University of Saskatchewan Huskies’ quarterback TRENT PETERSON found the end zone three times in the fourth quarter to give his team a 40-12 victory over the visiting University of Western Ontario Mustangs Friday night in a non-conference game at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.

Peterson’s touchdowns found Jade Etienne, Garrett Bolen and Owen Geier in the end zone all within eight minutes in the final frame. Peterson, in his first year of eligibility, spent 2007 as a redshirt for the Huskies before heading to Paraguay on a mission. The Calgary native went 8-for-11 for 174 yards.

Western is the third team in three seasons the Huskies have brought in to play in a non-conference game to help prepare for the Canada West season. In 2008, the Concordia University Stingers visited, followed by the University of Alberta Golden Bears in 2009.

“This was a good first test for our players,” said Huskie head coach Brian Towriss. “We were able to get a lot of people into the game. Our rookies were able to test themselves against a top quality team.”

Even with the lopsided score, the teams took their time to develop a rhythm.
