CALGARY – Aaron Ifield certainly has a flair for the dramatic.
Ifield hit a 51-yard field goal with just three seconds on the clock to become the all-time CIS field goal leader, kicking the 71st of his career. And it made it just inches over the crossbar. It capped a dominant performance by the Calgary Dinos as they finished the 2010 season 6-2 with a 37-5 win over the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.
While the game itself had no bearing on the final standings – the fifth-ranked Dinos finish the season second and will host Regina in a Canada West playoff semifinal next Saturday afternoon – Ifield came into the contest needing one field goal to tie Western Ontario’s Frank Jagas for the all-time national lead and two to take the record outright. He hit on his first attempt from 47 yards late in the second quarter to tie the record of 70 before missing his next two attempts from 35 and 47 yards, setting up the fourth-quarter dramatics.
Both teams get set for the Canada West playoffs next week. Alberta (3-5) will visit the first-place Saskatchewan Huskies (6-2) in one semi-final, while the Dinos (6-2) will host the 5-3 Regina Rams in the other. WINNIPEG - In a football game that meant little in the 2010 Canada West standings, the
Manitoba Bisons earned their second win, to finish the 2010 season, with a 35-25 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at University Stadium (U of M campus).
At the completion of the 2010 conference season for both teams, Manitoba finished officially in fifth with a 2-6 record while UBC dropped to sixth spot with a 2-6 mark with the loss. Manitoba won the season series with both victories over the Thunderbirds and both teams had already not qualified for
the playoffs this season.
In a crazy and entertaining contest, both teams combined for exactly 900 yards of offence, 60 points on offence, five turnovers and back-to-back touchdowns on kick return plays. Bison rookie WR Quincy Hurst had a 100-yard punt return (tied for fifth-longest in team history) for the first score of the second half and on the ensuing kickoff, UBC fourth year DB Sam Carino matched Hurst with a 96 -ard kickoff TD.
Matt Henry finished with 27 overall touchdowns and 23 rushing TDs in his career, both totals second best in team history.

Rams-Huskies Game Stats

SASKATOON - For the third straight season, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies will finish first in the Canada West football standings.
The No. 3-ranked Huskies solidified the top spot with a 52-29 victory over provincial foe the University of Regina Rams Friday night in Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park. It also marks the fifth time in eight years the Huskies have been on top of the standings.
Saskatchewan finishes the season with a 6-2 record and will now face the fourth-place University of Alberta Golden Bears Saturday, November 6 in a Canada West Semifinal game. Regina, who drops to 5-3 with the loss, will face the University of Calgary Dinos in the other conference semifinal in Calgary.
Nixon completed 23-of-32 passes for the Huskies for 424 yards with four touchdowns. Etienne was his main target racking up 204 yards in the game. Thomas finished with 105 yards. Linebacker Nico Higgs finished the game with 7.5 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Mitch Friesen and Bryce McCall each had interceptions for the Huskies.
Game time for the semifinal on Saturday, Nov. 6 will be 1:00 p.m. in Griffiths Stadium.
