CFL-Canada West: Cut down day sees some CW prospects left on sideline

CFL.ca - On Saturday, June 25th a few Canada West players had the axe fall on their hope of making the opening-day CFL roster.

Eight Dinos make CFL rosters

In Friday's final 2011 CFL preseason contest, former Dinos WR Anthony Parker made one reception for the Calgary Stampeders as they defeated their Alberta rival, the Eskimos, 37-22 in Edmonton. He also returned one kick 13 yards.

Another Dinos sensation, RB Matt Walter, ran twice for one yard in limited duties with the Stamps. For the Eskimos, a third Dinos product, WR Nathan Coehoorn, saw very limited play and did not make a reception.

on Thursday (June 23rd), Grant Shaw (Saskatchewan Huskies) continued the tradition of solid kickers produced by Canada West football schools, successfully making his only field goal, adding a point-after-touchodwn and punting six times for an average 44.3 yards as the Toronto Argonauts won their final CFL 2011 preseason contest, 30-23 in Winnipeg.

Also for the Argonauts, Spencer Watt (Simon Fraser) made three receptions for 23 yards.

On June 23rd, B.C. Lions cut UBC product, DL Sean Ortiz, from the camp roster.

On Wednesday, June 22nd Hugh O'Neill booted a 50-yard field goal on his only attempt during a 34-6 CFL preseason win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Vancouver.

O'Neill also made two point-after-touchdown attempts and punted twice for an average of 41.5 yards.

Former Regina Rams slotback Chris Getzlaf made two receptions for 24 yards for the Riders, while Regina Rams graduate Jason Clermont grabbed one pass for five yards.

Canada West products Shea Emry (UBC), Paul Woldu (Saskatchewan) and Brian Ridegeway (SFU) each made three tackles for Montreal during a 57-20 loss at Hamilton as both teams closed out their 2011 preseason schedule.

Thursday, June 9th: Dinos OL Quinn McCaughan has been added to the Calgary Stampeders training camp roster, while 2007 Regina Rams receiver Kolten Solomon was released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Wednesday, June 8th: Former Canada West wide receivers Blaine Kruger (UBC) and Brenden Owens (Regina) were early camp cuts by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Tuesday, June 7th - 2007 Manitoba Bisons Vanier Cup winner, DL Justin Cooper (2005-07), has retired from the CFL while attending camp with the Calgary Stampeders. Cooper, a native of Red Deer, AB, spent three seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos.

On Monday, former Bison LB Cory Huclack (Manitoba, 2002-06), one of Canada West's top tacklers and a 2006 President's Trophy nominee as CIS Outstanding Defensive Player, has joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders for his fifth pro season.

MONTREAL (CP) - The weekend saw a trio of former Saskatchewan Huskies and a UBC football grad are among those who were a part of the 2010 Montreal Alouettes Grey Cup champion team.

13-year CFL veteran Scott Flory collected his third championship ring, having also been with the Als in 2002 and 2009. Ivan Brown almost missed out, having been released in July of 2010, but he re-signed with Montreal on October 25th, 2010. Cornerback Paul Woldu nabbed his second Cup victory in only three pro seasons, while former UBC Thunderbird Shea Emry was the other former Canada West player to be present for the ceremony.

On June 6th, former Simon Fraser kicker Luca Congi was placed on Injured Reserve by the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Chris Bodnar, a 2010 Canada West Al-Star kicker with the Regina Rams, was released by the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday, May 4th.

Thursday, June 2: Fourth overall 2011 CFL draft pick Jade Etienne, an All-Canadian receiver for the Saskatchewan Huskies, has officially been added to the Winnipeg Blue Bomber's roster. In other mid-week news, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats added former Regina Cougars WR Brenden Owens to their camp roster, while the Saskatchewan Roughriders signed 2011 CFL draft pick Alexander Krausnick-Groh of the Calgary Dinos.

Tuesday, May 31st CFL news included the Edmonton Eskimos signing fifth overall 2011 pick and two-time CIS All-Canadian receiver Nathan Coehoorn of Redcliff, Alberta, who has amassed 132 receptions for 1,961 yards and eight regular season TDs over four seasons with the Calgary Dinos. Coehoorn was a CIS All-Canadian in 2008 and 2009, as well as a Canada West All-Star in 2010.

On Monday, May 30 the Hamilton Tiger-Cats added UBC product, WR Blaine Kruger, to their camp roster. The B.C. Lions have added fourth-year Alberta Golden Bears kicker Hugh O'Neill.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers signedd the Calgary Dinos OL Paul Swiston.

The Calgary Stampeders added Dinos RB Matt Walter to the roster.

Veteran kicker Jamie Boreham, a former member of three different Canada West schools (UBC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) was released by the Edmonton Eskimos.
