Canada West Football: 2011 spring camps getting underway

Huskies hit field in spring camp

SASKATOON - Ready to hit the turf of Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park for spring camp, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie football team will get its first chance to test skills for the 2011 season.

Spring camp kicks off early Thursday morning with the 11th annual Dogs Breakfast at Prairieland Park and wraps up Sunday with the Green and White scrimmage. The Dogs Breakfast helps raise scholarship funds for the team. CFL legendary quarterback Damon Allen will be the quest speaker. At the event, Huskie head coach Brian Towriss will make an official announcement of 17 new recruits to the team.

The players will then hit the field that night at 6 p.m. in the first practice of the weekend. They suit up again at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Noon and 5 p.m. Saturday and finally 11 a.m. Sunday. All fans, supporters, alumni, family and friends are invited to attend any of the practices during the camp. The camp will feature around 98 returning Huskies, new recruits and walk-on players.

Dinos Spring Camp Coming Soon

CALGARY - The Mitchell Bowl champion University of Calgary Dinos return to the field at McMahon Stadium for their 2011 Spring Camp this weekend. The camp begins Friday afternoon with the annual Recruit Signing Day and wraps up Sunday with the annual Red-White scrimmage.

All sessions and events are open to the public and the media. Players and coaches will be available immediately following all practice sessions.

Recruit Signing Day: Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the meeting room at McMahon Stadium (amateur building) Coach Blake Nill will introduce his 2011 recruiting class.

East West Bowl: Coach Nill along with three players – LB Sam Hurl, OL Kirby Fabien, and OL Carson Rockhill – will attend the annual CIS football all-star game in London, Ont. next week. All four will be available to speak about the event.

Spring Camp: Bringing together returning players along with recruits, the Dinos retake the field for the first time since the Vanier Cup. After four practice sessions, the Red-White Scrimmage closes the event on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

WINNIPEG - The 2011 Bison Football Spring Camp will commence on the last weekend of April and will be run at the University Stadium (U of Manitoba campus) from April 28 to May 1.

Rams kickoff Spring Camp

REGINA - The Regina Rams will hold their 2011 Spring Camp this weekend beginning on Friday, April 29 and running through Sunday, May 1 on campus at the U of R Field.

The camp starts out on Friday with practices at 3 and 7:30 p.m., continues on Saturday with on-field sessions at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and wraps up with a scrimmage on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The camp will mark the team's first time back on the field since their 2010 season ended. The Rams are expected to lose just four starters from last year's team that placed third in the Canada West standings last season with a 5-3 conference record.

Gridiron Bears hit the field for Spring Camp

EDMONTON - Spring isn’t the only thing in the air these days; soon the sky above Foote Field on the University of Alberta’s south campus will be filled with footballs as well, as Golden Bears kick-off their 2011 Spring Camp.

The Bears are coming off a season that saw them advance to the playoffs for the second time in as many years. They then shocked the nation in the opening round of the post season, scoring 28 unanswered points in Saskatoon, including a fourth-quarter 33-yd touchdown catch by Richardson, to upset the Saskatchewan Huskies 31-30 and advance to the Hardy Cup.

All practices for the camp are at Foote Field.
